Hello everyone, and happy holidays!
I’ve been wanting to take some time and talk about what’s coming next for Word Bomb. I’ve been getting lots of questions lately about the sequel I mentioned in the description, and I think it’s time for a proper update about where I’m at with the project, what’s changed, and where we’re headed.
The Short Version
- Word Bomb is getting a major update (v3.0.0) that rebuilds the framework while keeping the core gameplay similar
- We’ll be testing new features such as further increasing prompt difficulty over time, new puzzle elements, and a potential voting system for game modes
- After that, a completely new sequel is coming
- The sequel will simply be called “Word Bomb”, and the current version of Word Bomb will be renamed to “Word Bomb Classic”
- Testing for v3.0.0 begins early 2025
- Aiming for the first half of 2025 for testing for the sequel
A Change of Plans
When I first announced the sequel in the game’s description, I was planning to focus entirely on creating a new version of Word Bomb while leaving the current version as it is. However, as development progressed, I was starting to realize that this approach wasn’t going to work as smoothly as I’d hoped. Development on the sequel wasn’t moving as quickly as I initially wanted, and I was starting to see that both versions of the game would benefit from sharing a modern, robust foundation. Not only can Word Bomb Classic benefit from some of the new features I’m introducing in the sequel, but also, Roblox frequently updates their systems, which can sometimes introduce problems that need proper fixes and patches in both games!
Realizing this, I made a new decision: instead of solely focusing on the sequel, I’m going to first work on rebuilding and improving the current version of Word Bomb. This isn’t just some detour – and it’s actually going to help make the sequel even better in the long run, as both games will share many core components.
What’ll be new?
Word Bomb Classic (v3.0.0)
The current version of Word Bomb (v2.2.43g) will be getting a significant update. While the gameplay and UI will feel mostly familiar, there are still some exciting changes coming:
- New Framework: A complete rebuild of the game’s foundation to make it more stable and easier to update
- Server List: Finding new games will be easier with a server list
-
Quality of Life Updates:
- A new settings panel
- Improved virtual keyboard for mobile players
- Chat prompts to find new servers when you’re eliminated
-
General Improvements:
- More dynamic prompt difficulty that increases over time
- New gameplay elements and mechanics in new modes
- Potential voting system for game modes in public servers (I’m looking for feedback on this!)
- A small tutorial to help explain the new mechanics, if any
The Sequel
After Classic’s update, I’ll be focusing on the new version of Word Bomb. Here’s what makes it different:
- Matchmaking: No more server hunting - you can queue for games and be matched automatically
- Competitive Mode: Finally, ranked play is coming!
- More Puzzling Gameplay: I’m experimenting with trying out new modes that lean into and focus more on thinking out a solution rather than just typing speed
- Fresh UI: A completely new look while keeping the spirit of Word Bomb
- Leaderboards: While they might not be ready at launch, they’re definitely planned
Moving Forward
I know this might be different from what some of you were expecting based on my earlier sequel announcement. While the sequel is still absolutely coming, I’ve decided to take this approach of updating Classic first because I think it’s better for the health of both games. Since both versions will share the same foundation, we’ll actually be able to experiment with sequel features right in Classic. I’m planning to set up playtests like this, where you’ll get to try out new mechanics and game modes before they make their way into the sequel!
Looking ahead, we’re aiming to start testing Word Bomb Classic v3.0.0 in early 2025, with sequel testing following that, aiming for the first half of 2025. A lot of things are still up in the air as development goes, and plans might shift along the way. Throughout this whole process – both before and after these testing phases – I’m definitely looking to share some updates. Not on a strict schedule, but regularly enough to catch up and keep everyone in the loop.
Thanks for taking the time to read through all of this! I’m looking forward to sharing more details as development continues. Your patience and support really does mean a lot.
