1st person. I’m doing a first person horror game and I did some research. Me and my friend played a bunch of horror games. All the first person games were the best, first person gives a more real feeing. In third person you can look behind you and everything. I’m first person you can only look forward.
Depends on what the gameplay is like. If you’re focusing on some round based gameplay game where players compete I wouldn’t do first person because, personally, I feel like I wouldn’t enjoy playing in some sort of competition game in 1st person. If it’s more of an experience horror game with a storyline; 1st person is better. The limited vision and lifelike feel will up your creep factor for sure
Well the game is very unique, so i don’t want to give too much away. Its more of a, ‘Who is that?’, ‘What was that noise?’, ‘Who do these footsteps belong to?’, ‘Is he coming?’, ‘wHat ArE tHoSe?’.
So i think i’ll stick with 1st person, mainly because of how those questions the player asks is relevant to what @ScytheSlayin said makes a true horror game. I’ll still keep this post up incase anybody thinks otherwise.
I think first person is better because it makes you feel like you’re in the situation just a little and it gives you more of a scary vibe. Take example from Identity fraud and piggy. Piggy isn’t really a scary game while Identity fraud is. The idea of not knowing whats behind you or whats chasing you (unless youre constantly turning your back) makes it a little scarier.
As @Meisrcool said, the limited vision helps a lot.
I have made a nitnoid free modeled project in the past where you were locked in first person. I turned on fog, and the game had me jump a few times because I just unexpectedly died. If I was in 3rd person, I wouldn’t have experienced the jump that horror games strive for. I would say, yes, go for first person.
I agree with @ScytheSlayin, it feels more horrific when you go in first person, yet being in third person can eliminate the threat of feeling uneasy and scared.
People often look down on the third person aspect on the basis of “not realistic”, even though realism is often a silly argument that falls flat. There are still many examples of successful third person horror games with better execution than first person. It’s difficult but not impossible.
Personally I choose first person because of the expanse of immersion that I can achieve by making the player feel like they are fully in another’s shoes and because it’s what I work better with. I try not to rely on cheap gimmicks regardless and try to utilise the first person view to my advantage when trying to figure out how to make the game scary.
It’d be better to know what your game is comprised of. What’s the aesthetic, what’s the aim, so on? You should choose a mode that best fits the atmosphere and aims of your game. Do you want them to fully assume the character’s perspective, or are you good with a bit of air space through a non-FP camera and are prepared to compensate in terms of fear factor?
I think you should make it an option so players can choose. It will most likely get more people to play it, too. Different people have different comforts.
i know that 3rd person make you feel more comfortable, but is being comfortable really the point of a horror game??
1st person make the game a lot scarier and provides a better atmosphere! (i came to this conclusion after torturing myself with the task of actually playing several horror games ) i definatley found 1st person games more engaging as well
