2-for-one: Maya export files and texturing

So I have two questions to pose in this one, both relating to Autodesk Maya.

Question 1:
In Maya, when I try to export a Mesh I designed through a .fbx file, studio refuses to read the file, saying it’s invalid. Does anyone know why this is happening? It’s an issue I’m more curious about than anything since I can easily circumvent this by exporting in .obj format.

Question 2:
My other dilemma is whether any of the texture types in the rendering bar can export to studio, and if so, how I’d go about doing this.

This is the model I’m texturing…

Thanks for any help and information you guys post! I’m really new to modeling in Maya (this is my 3rd day using something other than studio), so I’m stumbling my way through it.

Also hows that for my first mesh? I was very inefficient if you cant tell by the tris count, but it’s something nonetheless. The bottom-most part of the hilt was started in studio, and expanded upon in Maya, since I wouldn’t even discover the program till the following day after being assigned to make a sword on my team.
