Many good 3D thumbnails are very expensive. The 2D thumbnails I have seen are not as expensive and I am thinking of getting a 2D thumbnail, as my game has brought in almost no funds yet. Many large games have 3D thumbnails instead of 2D.
Are 3D thumbnails (GFX designed to clarify) more effective than 2D thumbnails? Is there a difference?
I just want some feedback on this because my game is releasing soon and I need thumbnails for it.
I’m assuming you aren’t talking about the game icon, correct me if I’m wrong. I would say its just how you present it. 3D thumbnails could be more “real” than 2D, but theres a lot that goes into organizing a aesthetically pleasing 3D gfx, like just a 3D screenshot of the game wouldn’t look as nice as maybe a well made 2D icon thumbnail. Am I making this too confusing?
Long story short, both can look nice and be just as effective if the right amount of work goes into them. Pricewise, if it can’t be too expensive, 2D can be just as eye-catching. Keep in mind this is my view on the topic. Sorry about this being so long lol.
3D is kind of the new standard in most game categories.
It more depends on your age and audience. If your game is geared toward older players, then 3D is probably better. If it is a cartoony, younger player game, 2D is good (though 3D is still good in this situation).
depends on the game some games look better with a 2D thumbnail and some look better with a 3D. generally more cartoony games can look really nice with a 2D thumbnail while more realistic shooters look better with a 3D
I agree with what above said, but they should have been a little more polite.
There is no real difference between 2D and 3D thumbnails when it comes to the game’s success, but having something that attracts the audience you are looking for is a good first step to bringing players into your game. Choose whatever fits best for your game’s style.
It doesn’t have to be all fancy with the GFX (you don’t even need to pay for it), you can simply show some in-game pictures and slap some text on what a player can do in your game.
But, there are so many other factors when it comes to a game’s success, and some factors a lot more important than others. (gameplay, ui, ux, advertising, etc.) Thumbnails are only a small part of that equation.
