Hello! So currently I’m in the process of making a Grid-Turn Based Battle System like that of XCOM 2 and the Shining Force series (those are the only two I recognize, mainly Shining Force 1 and 2 but thats besides the point).
How a battle starts at the moment is that you have 5 (or less) of your characters laid out on a grid, and 5 (or less) of the enemy team on the other side. Battles are played in a 23x23 grid and every character can move 5 tiles in any direction.
Your characters are able to use many moves with different ranges, aoe’s, effects, and all of that cool stuff.
This system sounds good and it does, theres no denying it. But I want to improve on this system and make it more fun for my upcoming audience who will play the game.
I don’t want battles to be too complicated or every game you play will just be a brain beating rather than a training, but I also want it to still have a good amount of layers of strategy so that the game is interesting and keeps you immersed in it for long times. I don’t want battles to be too long since they will be frequent, and I want players to enjoy the game.
Do any of you experienced game designers have any ideas on how I can improve on this system? So some mechanics I’ve decided to add is item consuming and having two characters be able to attack on the same turn on special occasions. What should I add so the system is more fun?
