Core is a garbage platform, it’s the equivalent of only being able to use toolbox. There’s not even meshparts in it, if you were actually leaving I’d recommend Unity/UE4
I bet, if we can get a few popular devs on here we could at least ease the update a little. Why not just get a better copyright handling bot and delete the previous existing copyright audios? They are trying to improve their potato servers, so why not work on a copyright bot as well? We could do an audio sweep and erase the copright audios. You also know things are bad when someone made a Change.org petition with 1,024 signatures lol.
Even if the change is mandatory, they can still alleviate damages.
There is absolutely no feasible way for me to fix my game, even when attempting to adapt to these changes.
If Roblox had given audios the same access permissions as animations in terms of groups and how they work, I could very well fix my stuff. I even started trying to do that earlier. However, because of how they chose to handle audio permissions, it’s impossible.
That is why I am upset. They have not only forced these new restrictions, but made them more harsh than they need to be.
Unlike the new materials update, they are at risk of losing money. I dont like the execution, but its been more than half a week and no response.
Not very confident it’ll be reverted/change anymore to be honest
There will be more granular audio permissions at some point (unfortunately not on the 22nd) allowing you to grant permission to use the audio in other contexts than just the group that uploaded it so long term the assets will not have to be needlessly reupload multiple times.
Yeah, true. They are literally asking to loose people, and right when they are at their peak of developers/game creators, this may be the downfall of the Roblox platform. The execution is terrible and game creators such as “Coeptus” from “Welcome to Bloxburg” have made compensation for the “Unlocked stereo gamepass.” PeetahBread made a video about this and I think this is more than fair. I claimed my reward. Still waiting on something from Brookhaven RP though.
I do believe that this is the right thing to do, and game creators are doing their best to deal with this so they all have my mass respect.
I’m going to assume the lack of these features on the 22nd is due to some sort of restrictive timeframe imposed by the suit… But that’s an understandable reason at least.
In that case, I’ll just hold back from developing until these permissions come out. Hopefully these permissions can be done in bulk rather than a case-by-case basis, to alleviate some of the workload. I guess I’m just going to have to wait to fix everything, but at least it’s possible in the future now.
Thank you for informing me of this, I was really worried.
You don’t think they’re hearing from the top level game devs these same complaints. If they decide to implement any sort of easing changes, they’ll put out that information.
Why is it such a consistent issue that crucial features are disabled before the alternative is complete? The ability to grant use of your audio to other people at some arbitrary point in the future doesn’t solve the problem that it’s not an ability we have now. It adds unnecessary work on developers to reupload the same audio two or three times for every group they have a game in, and then going through the process of appealing copyright takedowns and proving you have the license for every single one.
This is not to mention that we were only given 2 weeks notice to do this for each of our games - each of our groups - before they all break and/or go silent.
i’m enjoying the newfound lawyers in this discussion.
Top level game devs probably have more organized systems in place than my niche case does. I rely on several groups for shared assets in singular games, but most developers on a high level likely only use single groups for assets.
As much as I dislike the current alternative, I think it’s probably the lawsuit. They were likely given a 2 week frame to introduce a solution before being forced to pay UMG a frankly ridiculous amount of money… So they probably don’t even have time to actually make the alternative and have it work correctly. That’s probably why the update feels so slapped together right now, because they had no choice but to rush.
Sure, I do hold Roblox accountable for not finding solutions before a lawsuit, but I don’t think they’re necessarily doing this out of ill will or lack of consideration, because if so tna probably wouldn’t have said anything at all.
I think I’ve been saying this now a few times recently. Roblox themselves do have a defence to this suit. That being that due to the fact that users uploaded the audio and the fact Roblox does have a DMCA notice and take down system and a repeat infringer policy Roblox as a corporation technically cannot/should not be held liable for the infringement. Because those key factors I highlighted are things that can make Roblox quality as a safe harbor under the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act 17 U.S.C. §§ 512
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and this is based on my interpretation of the suit and mentioned laws and regulations)
I believe they got threatened because there was not too much action taken against it.
While yes, you do upload audio on your own will, Roblox is technically held responsible got it.
Of course, this is what I think and I have no/little background informatuon on copyright laws and policies.
I personally went on strike. Took everything offsale and private I think roblox needs to hear our voices.
Yez we are good lawyers on the Roblox Developer Forum LOL
The game that i work on has 200m visits and is stuck to an inactive user his profile.
We cant transfer the game to a group game which means the owner has to upload the audio in order to replace the audio but that is not possible in my situation.
How am i supposed to use audio in my game when there is no possible way to replace it myself because when i do the audio will appear private for the game’s owner?
Is there anything that could be done in my case?
When should we expect a date that these extra permissions will be rolled out? So you’re saying that starting on the 22nd, there will be an uncertain amount of time that will pass in which most of the longer sounds in my group’s game will not work whatsoever even if I own the sounds through my account?
WE DEMAND MORE TRANSPARENCY.
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL OPINION BASED
Basically Roblox is telling us to use a 3rd party app for game music (ex. YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, etc.) Although I am 95% against this change, that other 5% says It’s partially a good thing. As youtubers such as SharkBlox, KonekoKitten, and Parlo have mentioned that this may cause some developers to quit it avoids any future lawsuits in some form. I do believe Roblox should ease these restrictions though. Many games I play include audio from the Marketplace and they are going to be greatly affected. I also believe Roblox Corporation should view the community’s feedback more often as well. This update has brought the Roblox community, Roblox Twitter Community, and the Developer community at an all time low. I have never seen Roblox players/devs so mad over an update and I believe they have every right in the world to be.
Pros
- Roblox avoids future copyright claims and lawsuits
- This creates a big opportunity for developers to create their own game audio / soundtracks
- Roblox games have an opportunity to be partially unique
Cons
- Roblox looses developers along with money
- Roblox players get bored with their favorite games not having audio
- Roblox players feel scammed
Did this idea come from David Baszucki himself or the ideas department?
This update certainly ruins even my private projects as well as my public games. Not exactly happy with this update, especially with the limits set per month.
For example, my first game I made, Obby of Realms, uses background music provided by Roblox. I’d hate to see that get archived.
