[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

dang, wish I waited couple days before spending a couple thousand Robux on audios before the no fee update
but good update! Glad that won’t happen again

EDIT: I’ve looked through the change a bit more and it’ll be rather painful than amazing as I worded…

Glad to see that this new feature was added to protect our work, but I personally think there should be an exclusion filter for some audios when discovering them. E.G. when I’m searching for an Alarm noise, I want a quick 5 second noise, not “Alarm East (B)” that lasts 3 minutes, uploaded by Roblox.

We should have an option to filter out audios uploaded by Roblox, because you search for something but the results are flooded by these results.

Yes, I know the time filter exists, but Roblox also uploads a bunch of quick tunes that last only a few seconds. They are not what I am looking for.

so what happens to sounds if it’s already in a place then? (have the physical sound not running it through id in code)

I like the whole audios being free and all but having every audio ever uploaded that’s over 6 seconds be unusable unless you were the one who uploaded them, even if they were set to be on sale?

I rely on free audios everytime I make a game and it would be a pain to find another perfect audio to replace each and every one.

I feel like all audios that are set to be on sale and uploaded before the change should start as public but then creators can change them to private as needed, assuming they can change that.

is there still an option to upload more sounds for Robux after the limit is surpassed?

This is not a good update at all. This is going to break so many games on so many levels. All the music that creates ambiance will be lost and won’t be able to re-create an atmosphere where an experience is immersive—instead of being forced to use licensed audios or to start a new experience. Since some games use thousands of sound effects going back to making them public is an immense task for anyone. Great idea to have the ability to upload free audio, but this is masking a much bigger problem that will arise later down the line.

I tried to upload an audio, and the amount of free uploads does seem real…

Will the Roblox website (in the library) continue to illegally redistribute audio they do not own (when the game developers bought rights to the audio only for their experience) ?

Is it just luck for certain people (including me) that can post 2K audios a month?

I despise of this update. - Before you judge please read.

I thought it was could until I kept scrolling. What if you have Developers like me? Who aren’t 18, But 15, Trying to make your game a original as possible. Now instead of uploading my own sounds I have to go use other’s? I don’t really like the sound of that.

Especially since I just started my new State Roleplay, and Your trying to be FRESH sounds? Such as the; Tazer, Car Engine (more than 6 seconds.), Inside of building Sounds, chirping sounds and all that Jazz?

Man, I really tried to make my project as original as possible. B7t If I don’t get sounds done in this little time period, that’s all down the drain.

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. My game, and many other games, use boomboxes or allow users to use audio ids for plenty of reasons, either being monetization, or just allowing for greater user experience with customization. I don’t mean to sound arrogant when I say this, but a lot of the Roblox licensed audio doesn’t allow for a lot of expression. I can’t name a single time where I used the licensed music, mostly because trying to find a song or sound effect has been made a pain in the ass ever since they were introduced.

Personally, I used to, and still do, hang out with friends and play games just because of the boombox feature. Many games in general are centered around this concept of music, and I don’t see how this update will positively impact games like that.

Please reconsider this aspect of this update. Allow for audio to be used publicly, in any context, if it is made public by the creator. I don’t see any positives with these new privacy changes.

I might have missed something before, but what if a game is uncopylocked and (more than likely) has audio in it? What about the hundreds of thousands of uncopylocked games that are on the platform? Will we not be able to use those assets anymore despite them being uncopylocked? What will this mean for preservation?

The purpose of uncopylocking a game is to allow people to use the assets that are in inside of it. Making it so audio uploaded by the user who made the game itself unusable partially defeats the purpose for me, if I’m reading this right.

I welcome the ability to make free audio, but the only thing keeping me from enjoying this update is the concern regarding older games on the platform that were made before this change. There are a lot of users on ROBLOX that have made notable games but have been banned for who knows how long, so they won’t even be able to review the audio that’s in their games to ensure that they still work.

This could potentially SERIOUSLY damage the platform and their motto of “Powering Imagination” if this change destroys older games that used audio and can’t be checked anymore.

If I missed something in the OP, please tell me. I’m rather confused and concerned at the moment.

I agree, this would be a good option. But, I’m not sure if Roblox is going to let us do that.

I think the audio upload limit for unverified accounts should be more than 10.

feels too good to be true I fear a new problem is waiting to occur with this new update
hopefully, everything works out and this update stays!

Audio I upload to a group is showing up as “not owned by the creator of this place” (the place is also uploaded to the same group)

Great to see more of feautures
Becoming available without fees or premium. Its good to see this change being added, and it’s wonderful that Roblox is allowing free audio uploads for users.

On March 22, all new audio uploaded will be Private and all existing audio longer than 6 seconds will be set to Private .|

While making audios free to upload, this in contrast is a horrible idea. Copyright is an important thing, no doubt about it, but this is not how copyrighted audio should be filtered. This will make games that use many sound effects or audios a living nightmare to make, especially my game, with hundreds of different songs and sound effects. Each portion of my game could have over 100 different audios to play different types of music, and this update will cause that to become impossible to do. It will completely disrupt and break multiple aspects of my game that revolve around music and audio, and restricting the library so that all audios are private by default further discourages creativity and innovation on Roblox by forcing the creator to manually upload each individual audio file, slowly, one at a time, instead of being able to easily search up the song or sound effect and have it front and center, ready to use.

I really do not want this change to occur. It will take away months, perhaps even half the year, just to replace the hundreds (if not, thousands) of different music used in my game. Music and audio is a necessary thing to create a mood, feeling, or atmosphere. Taking away the ability to find the audio others have provided and use it will completely ruin ANY game that relies on audio, even slightly. I understand Roblox is trying to supply its own catalogue of sound effects and music, but a majority of the music supported by Roblox does not fit the mood or atmosphere of practically ALL of the games on roblox. We can’t be expected to use some generic and uneventful song on a portion of game where you could be at the very end of the story, literally facing the final boss in a battle. Roblox on its own cannot possibly provide music for every single mood possible, nor could it possibly provide many of the songs that the players of roblox love to listen to. It all around just seems like it will create more soulless and uninspired games, due to the use of bland, or unfitting music / audio.

Please reconsider the change to private all existing audios over 6 seconds long, as this creates nothing but stress for creators, is a major step back, will ruin the atmosphere and mood of countless games, and overall will just further nudge people away from roblox entirely, including myself.

EDIT: I’m currently looking through one of the (currently) five areas of my game, and I am in disbelief.

Over 100 audios of ONE PLACE in my game are going to need replacement, and this is just for ONE PLACE. I would not doubt that I have more than a thousand audios in use in my game, to create different moods and different atmospheres. How does Roblox expect me to replace all this music with equally fitting (and quality) music?! This is absurd.

I thought the animation update was too labor-intensive. God damn, if I knew what was coming I would have just shut my mouth on that thread.
