This update is horrible. There are no other words to describe it.
I like the fact I can upload audios for free… but only 10 a month because I refuse to provide Roblox with ID, please tell me why ID should be related to uploading +90 more audio a month, this is complete nonsense.
Furthermore, I am told by a trusted source that this could be coming to all asset types in the future.
This update is going to break many games privating audio that is over 6 seconds long, how are developers going to cope with this? Plus we don’t know when you’ll be able to publish audio again.
I have one question. Will you be required to submit ID for this?
If so, I am greatly concerned for Roblox, you are restricting access to development which arguably should be open to everyone.
The moment you realize that roblox is outdated and developers should move to unreal and unity, whose creators are more competent and help game developers instead of creating constant problems.
I have been working on this platform for several years and what first comes to mind when you say “roblox studio” - problems, problems, problems and more problems.
They can change course later, but my assumption is that this is something they have to do to solve the issue for now. They should have announced it sooner, but I think that they were hoping for a much better solution than this to get the music industry’s approval.
To be clear, I don’t know if this is the case. I’m hoping that it is, but there’s nothing concrete about what I’m saying. I’m taking some clues from how this is all worded, and the status of the plan as whole.
Roblox. If you’re going to make a game changing and breaking update like this GET FEEDBACK FOR HOW TO DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
At the VERY LEAST you could create a system that allows you to make your audios public again but YOU WON’T EVEN DO THAT!?
I have 2000 audio uploads per month but THAT ISN’T FAIR TO THOSE WITH 10-100, THEY SHOULD GET AT LEAST 1000. You all are putting handicaps on what people can do and it sucks.
And can we talk about what if I wanted to use MY audio that I uploading in my friend’s games?
Sound design is such a crucial part of game development, but you’re basically removing your whole motto of “UGC content” from the marketplace if you go down this route. It goes against everything you CLAIM to be for.
So why should I even use Roblox anymore? No, seriously, give me a good reason. What’s stopping me from quitting development or going off to another game engine that actually listens to the community’s feedback immediately, and ASKS what they want?
As a small time dev. This update will literally KILL my passion for developing games, I use prebuilt weaponry since I can’t code very well yet. This update feels like roblox blew its foot off with a nuke.
Honestly, do it. Nobody is stopping you, and I can list 4 engines that treat their community better.
Godot
Unity
Unreal
GameMaker
Plus, roblox is just discouraging development with this update. What if this goes to free models? We won’t be able to use those, even though roblox “stands” for ugc content. Plus, you would be making more money from those than here.
Probably nostalgia from ROBLOX to be honest. I’ve played ROBLOX since 2015, and after losing an account or two, I’ve thought of quitting aswell, but there’s always something bringing me back in to this loop.
This update is extremely badly executed, with little to no input from the Roblox community of course. The fact users weren’t told about this at all prior to the immediate change is, in my opinion, a very bad choice. I’m a showcase creator, and most of my friends are too. We use very specific audio to create an immersive experience.
The default Roblox audio tracks are often too pop and techno-oriented to fit for most situations. Not to mention we often fell in love with the great music we could find, and now the atmosphere of our showcases will be permanently changed. For example, Cyberpunk showcases will now have barely any available audio tracks recreating 1980s music.
Now I wish this update had been warned about months in advance, so creators at least would have the chance to prepare. Copyright issues should have been dealt with by Roblox moderation adequately, not required a blanket destruction of audios created by other users.
I’ve been using it since 2012, I’ve accepted a lot of updates because lots of them are cool, but this update broke the camel’s back. I can’t just stand by and let this happen.
The only thing probably keeping me using Roblox studio is the fact that I’m on the Mystery Flesh Pit dev team and that’s like the only project I feel compelled to work on now.
Well, that’s true, it isn’t that good of an update but it’s still good. What I don’t like is having to be verified to have access to 100 sounds a month and only big developers getting access to crazy things like 2000 sounds a month. The paid fee should be brought back after spending the free sounds of the month.
This is great. One small issue.
You would be able upload audios for free, but you can’t use uploaded audio by other users in your games because of them becoming private. I don’t think this is a good change as developers would have to re-upload already existing audios made by others to replace with their own.
And would you get in trouble for re-uploading other’s users audio?
Two things, one, thank you for free audio uploads, I really don’t want to spend 60 Robux on an Ambience sound effect. Two, making sounds under 6 seconds private, what the hell?! 31 sounds within my game will be made private, and they’re majorly heard sounds too, I’m only a small and beginner developer, why should I have to go through the pain of finding new sound effects, which I have found out of 5 literally 1, I’ve gave up looking for more.
There’s two parties at play here: Roblox, and the music industry. (None of this is concrete, but it’s my best guess given the way things are worded and how they’re doing this.) The music industry has to approve Roblox’s plan on how to manage audio, and I assume that this was their last resort, given the short amount of time given to comply, and how unfinished this plan is. They probably were hoping to come up with a better plan, but knew they had to cut their losses and just do something to satisfy them. I also do not want to forget that Roblox has investors now, and it’d be in their best interest to not need to pay others large sums if they can avoid it.
Audio that was specifically set to public by the uploader should stay public - forcing any existing public audio into private is not acceptable, as there are many developers who have gone out of their way to upload music for others to use and who are no longer active on the platform; their music, ambient sounds, and foley will no longer be available against their wishes and to the detriment of everyone using them.
