Add blur effect on transparent object?

I have a need to add a blur effect to an object with partial transparency. Basically, I have an part that is 50% transparent. When people look through the part, I want what’s on the other side blurred out. I have achieved a partial effect using decals, but it’s not a true blur distortion.

Any ideas?

Something like this?

How you even do that!?

I have been thinking about that effect, I don’t even know what it’s called.

It’s pixelated glass or blurry glass or foggy glass effect. I don’t know which exact one but it’s called that.

I decided to make a video on this because writing a step-by-step guide would be harder to understand.

Oh really cool, it’s a lot simpler than i thought it would be!

Yes. I learned about the effect from a video. I really can’t find it as of now but that video showcased this effect.

Yeah. Exactly like that in fact. I’m not really that good in blender though.

Well, then you should learn it. It’s really helpful.

But as you don’t know, here is the file.

I would, but I’m a software engineer, not an artist. Blender just does not make much sense to me. I do have art programs, but they are 2D only. And thanks for the file.

I’m also a software engineer yet I learned blender.
It doesn’t matter what field you are on, you can learn anything if you have the will power to do it.

You won’t get a file from everyone all the time you know? It’s best to learn than ask someone else to do it for you. It’s simply not ethical and really makes you look bad.

True.

I do have a question though. What did you do to apply the texture to the plane? I cannot figure it out.

EDIT:

I tried different materials and it only seems to work with glass. Probably because of the refraction index the engine must calculate for each facet like a gemstone. Here’s an image:

I expanded the mesh to cover the door in a 3x3 grid to balance visual effect and performance. Looks very nice and it’s the effect that I wanted to achieve. Thanks again.

You’ll understand better when you learn blender but I did it so I could make one side of the mesh not blurry.

could you explain how this works, i have no idea
(also thank you for the file., very helpful)

Roblox glass refracts all beams (beams used for rendering). I am just abusing it by having a lot of faces all angled at a random angle which causes the beams to refract in all directions which in turn, blurs the graphic.

This is the reason why a glass sphere can look “cool” from the sides.

Just for the future, word for partially transparent is translucent. I was confused when reading your title lol
