Add the option to block people from messaging you

I was looking through preferences and realized there’s no option to BLOCK someone from sending you a message, rather you can only allow certain people to message you, which is a Whitelist.

I kind of wanted a blacklist system.

While muting shouldn’t notify you about new messages, you can still find them if you look through messages, which can get annoying.

Problems:

People noticing you “blocked” them, etc.

Alternatives:

Allow a blacklist for messages which will not actually be received, but rather just pretend they were sent by you.

If this is a duplicate or already a thing, let me know via DMS else I can’t delete it :(

There’s a feature that allows you to ignore certain users. Even though it isn’t exactly a block, you’ll not receive any notifications from them + you’ll be unable to see any message/topic they’ve sent. That’s currently the only workaround. In order to use this feature, go to the profile of the person you wish to ignore. Then, click the notification status button (it should be either muted or normal) and choose “Ignored”.

btw do you want me to ignore you lol

By the way, I think it’s better to request such a feature on the Discourse forum.

That actually fits into the same muted user type of thing after testing:

Yep, I think I’m going to do that.

You’ve ignored me :frowning:

This only takes effect when a new post is created by that user or when you view an older one from that user (fun fact: if you have still ignored me then this post will be replaced with this: “Ignored content”). Other than that, it actually acts like a mute.

It says suppress, so when they try DMing you they’ll get a notification like “Sorry, {user} is currently not accepting messages at the moment.”
