Ever since Roblox added the blue checkmark to my profile, I’ve been getting tons of unwanted attention every time I join public servers. It usually goes something like this:
Who is Preston?
How did you get that verified checkmark?
Omg, PrestonPlayz! (Not me, different Preston)
Is that the guy who made Pet Simulator X?? (Also not me, different Preston)
Is that a developer?
Usually I don’t mind answering these questions, and politely reminding people that many people share the same name, but it happens so often that it makes me wish the checkmark didn’t appear in the chat or player list at all. It would be great if a new setting could be added to the website to control what experiences the checkmark appears in. The options could look something like this:
Profile only
In my experiences
In all experiences
Alternatively, the in experience checkmark could be removed altogether, because I can see how many players would mistakenly think the checkmark signifies developers or staff of the experience they’re currently playing, which is rarely the case. However, I think options would be more accommodating for people with the checkmark that want to keep it.
The checkmark is like social media checkmark, unless social medias do that, ROBLOX wouldn’t, they might if they see youtubers quitting over the checkmark, like kreekcraft for example
I understand its purpose on the website, but when playing random games, there’s zero reason that I should stand out. Like I said, in my own experiences is one thing, but there’s already a hammer icon in the player list for that. Having a checkmark in chat in every single experience is just too obtrusive.
Bump because this is still a problem I’m experiencing daily. The in-experience checkmark desperately needs visibility options, because for me it has been a burden that deters me from playing Roblox at all. I am struggling to understand the purpose of the in-game checkmark in the first place. The games I play have nothing to do with me as a developer and I don’t need the attention in them. It’s always unwanted, and has at times been hurtful.
One of my friends got harassed so badly over having the Verified badge he resorted to just getting rid of it entirely. The badge is flawed; people don’t need to have it on at all times. It just leads to others harassing people they wouldn’t otherwise notice.
This is still a huge issue over a year and a half later.
In nearly every game I visit, people will call out my Verified status!
Kids who get upset that I can’t donate the robux I DevEx to put food on the table.
“Fans” will tell me they watch my videos every day. I’m not a YouTuber, I don’t upload videos which build towards a specific audience.
Players blame me for problems in games I don’t work on, aiming whatever frustrations they’ve got towards me.
People insult me, target me in-game, harass me, assuming I must’ve cheated the system in order to earn my Verified status.
Kids assume “I don’t accept friend requests from people I don’t know.” is their cue to start sending personal info unprompted.
Playing in a public server means walking around with a constant spotlight on me. I’m not allowed to just relax and play without making a jerk out of myself and ignoring everyone, or hopping on an alt and abandoning whatever progress I had saved on my main. Considering I’ve been impersonated in the past, I’d prefer keeping my Verified badge if I can help it.
Just a reminder to everyone that /mute exists and you don’t have to bloat your block list, I know this isn’t a solution, but it’s useful to know and I tend to forget the command exists. (It will be useful to a lot of people here.)
The /mute command doesn’t stop users from targeting you in-game & ruining your experience nor does it stop slander and targeted harassment. I wouldn’t even classify it as a band-aid fix.
There needs to be privacy settings to hide the verified badge.
This is a feature I’ve wanted to see ever since they introduced the verified badge system.
Echoing the points made by both Preston and Ivy, it’s been difficult to play a lot of games without people thinking that I’m a content creator or a developer for the game. This has led to a lot of situations where I’d actively be singled out and bombarded by people when I’d just be trying to spend some time with my friends. This is particularly bad in PVP games where I often become the target purely because of my verified status. While this hasn’t been a universal experience, it’s frequent enough to where I often find myself backing out from playing some games with my friends.
Sure, I can avoid this by just playing on an alt, but this is just as much my childhood account as it is an account that I do development work on. I’d effectively be starting from scratch for any game that I actively play. I also can’t just change my display name to get rid of the badge since it’d leave me open to getting impersonated down the road.
All this is to say that being able to control where my verified badge is seen would be a massive quality of life improvement for both myself and other users who are active as both developers and players.
