Am I allowed to make a game that’s based off my real life school or any irl school? I would think no, but maybe I could? I would love to hear what you guys think!
Context is everything. If this is a school roleplay game, why do you think it’d be an issue? If it’s a shooter game, then it’s obvious that it’s better to not do this.
This seems like an odd thing to ask.
Granted, real life buildings don’t necessarily mean it’ll work in a game. Layouts are a lot easier to create to favour the player when you can just, say, anchor the floor - when real buildings have to obey the laws of physics. It’d be better to base your map design on an existing school (if that’s still your goal), and make adjustments to make the player feel better while moving around it.
Depends what you are trying to accomplish. Are you just basing it off of a real life school? For example, making something that looks like Harvard or your school IRL? Or is everything down to the naming, design and logos going to be similar. As far as i know there is nothing against this but you need to be wary as to what you are trying to do and if basing it off of something IRL has any benefit in-game.
I’m very positive you would be able to, but don’t include every detail of your school. If you were to make stuff like photos of violence and stuff, probably no.
Yeah obviously you could build it, i just wouldn’t include anything that could make it turn up in a google search such as the name of anything related to it like a football team.
Intellectual property can be confusing. You can’t use names like Harvard or UCLA. It’s unlikely anyone would be able to challenge something like “George Washington High School” as it’s a common name and historical. The more controversial your game is the more it will be up for scrutiny though. As for exact building layouts keep in mind floor-plans do belong to someone (often the architect). Every school has a gym, a theater, common areas, etc.
You may also want to consider who your target audience is. If they’re people from your school perhaps you want to stay closer to the details of your real school. If you want a general audience you may want to go for an “alternate universe” but keep details that are important to you. Think Springfield, USA or Arlen, TX.
Builds based on real life places are commonplace on the Roblox platform. However, I advise strongly against using private or personal indicators in the build itself which could reveal location, names, students, the school’s address, etc. This would violate Roblox’s standard and likely get the place taken down.
Isn’t this just a generic question of IP-related matters? Making a game using a real life school is about the same as making a Pokemon game on Roblox; it doesn’t sound like the same scenario but it is.
If you’re making a game based off of a real life school, might as well just build a school at all and not use any names that are already claimed by real academic institutions. You could take some inspirations here and there from your school as well if you want.
