Ambient occlusion smearing artefacts with FPS unlocker

The ambient occlusion that Roblox uses currently smears on edges over the span of a couple of frames if you have the Roblox FPS unlocker and have it set to a framerate above 60 FPS. This doesn’t happen if the FPS is just 60.

Below is a video showcasing the smearing (look on the edges of the walls to see it). Video compression has bungled it a bit, but you can spot it if you look closely

Steps to reproduce:

  • Get the Roblox FPS unlocker and set the max frame rate above 60
  • Set your graphics quality to max
  • Create 3 walls that look like this:

  • Turn your camera slowly from side to side (the effect is much more visible if you have a controller, for some reason)

Does this mean it only happens with an FPS unlocker?

I’ve noticed this however I can only see it happening in places where a lot of ambient occlusion takes place such as a mesh with lots of convergent points.

Yeah, I forgot to include it in the original post since I didn’t test it without the FPS unlocker. Apparently without it the smearing doesn’t happen

Yeah, the Roblox engine has a few things here and there that are designed for 60 fps or less so using an FPS unlocker can mess up some things like rendering, some scripts and in rare cases physics even.

Third-party programs, such as FPS unlockers, are not officially supported by Roblox. Although Roblox mentioned a higher refresh rate at RDC in 2019, it’s unknown when this will be implemented.

Roblox’ engineers will probably not solve this issue if it only happens to FPS unlockers, as that falls out of bounds of Roblox’ responsibilities.

Not a bug. What you want is to make a feature request for configurable refresh rate.

If the engine supported greater FPS rates then you wouldn’t have any need for an FPS unlocker in the first place because it would be available as a setting. We aren’t just preventing you from using a higher FPS out of spite, there’s many technical reasons (like this) that it isn’t supported right now.
