Any tips for a new builder?

Hello I’m LucasoArt I’ve been on roblox since 2016 and recently I’ve found a liking into building on roblox, so as I am going to start do any of you have any good tips for people like me wanting to start roblox studio and aspire to build cool things, Thanks a lot for any tips.

I would suggest using 0.25 or 0.50 or even 1 stud. This will help you do accurate measures for building. Make sure to build simple things and go for more complex things as you get the hang of it.

As a builder myself, I always recommend using the Building Tools by F3X plugin, the keycodes help me a lot and save lots of time. The normal studio tools aren’t as advanced and time saving.

build things big and then scale it down!! it makes little details so much easier to create. you also won’t have a hard time selecting parts in the model with this trick.

speaking of parts within a model, you can easily select something that is part of a group by holding alt and hovering over the object!! this will save you from having to click it in the explorer. it’s kinda buggy in f3x tho so keep that in mind if you’re gonna use the plugin. it took me a year to figure this out for some reason lol

i recommend learning studio’s main building shortcuts too (e.g. ctrl+1 to select, ctrl+2 to move, etc). you’ll get stuff done a lot faster this way.

DO NOT use the Toolbox! It contains lots of viruses, some can even get your account terminated!

Speaking from 5+ years of experience, try new things! Get a game idea in your head, make a plan and go for it. If you get stumped on something or you aren’t satisfied, do not give up on it. Find a way, whether it be on your own or through here on the DevForums. That is the quickest and most efficient way to sharpen your building skills.

Secondly, be organized! It will make your life so much easier down the road.

Finally, if you need help with something, don’t be afraid to look it up or post on the DevForums. My DevForum DMs are always open as well.

To sum it up, start something. Start a project or a game and work on it no matter what, and if you can’t figure it out, then figure it out. Whether you do it on your own or with some help. This will sharpen your skills overall tremendously.

Also, if you are careful and safe while doing it, take some models from the toolbox (KEY WORD, CAREFUL), you can use them to try to recreate them from scratch. This will also hone your skills greatly.

Adding onto that point, there are some default places on Studio. Launch those and side by side, recreate them. This may seem like a waste of time, but in the end, you will learn many different techniques that you didn’t have before.

Experiment with textures and various texturing. I have a texture kit in which I combined many different texture kits into one. I believe it may help you out to use it, as I also included a build kit, which includes various different parts that I use intensely. If you would like it you can take it here.

Use dummies to know how things should be scaled, use reference pictures for almost everything you do, use 0.05 increment, and practice practice practice. I started building almost 6 years ago and let me tell you, it’s not something you’ll get good with overnight. Practice practice practice.

Just pick a genre and get building, look up references as much as you can and try making it look that way as most commissions would want something similar or exact to a reference, so building close to a reference from the start will help you much more in the future. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THAT ALWAYS USE INCREMENTS ENDING AT 5 WHEN USING DECIMALS!!! For example, 0.25, 0.125, 0.05. I don’t recommend 0.1 as experienced, it has many errors when aligning builds. GET ENOUGH PRACTICE AN YOULL BE A GREAT BUILDER.

PS:Quick motivation, I have made many one-piece maps and made around 118k Robux, not braging, just letting you know that being a builder has its rewards.

Try getting references, get something In your head! so you know what your building + practice, and you’ll be a very good builder.

Surround yourself with people that are more experienced than you and observe the techniques they use. Also, understand that building takes a lot of time and patience to get things just right.

Do not compare yourself to any amazing builders which is what I did when I started out in 2015, but of course I am still astonished by some recent builds which I found was great because you can also compliment others who are starting out (like yourself). I also recommend using a plugin to design your builds instead of using the classic ROBLOX studio mechanisms. F3X is a good alternative to start out and considering there are a handful of youtube tutorials about it, you’ll do just fine with it.
TIP 1: Use increments like 0.25, 0.50 or possibly 0.1 & 0.05 in some cases (if you’re doing highly detailed builds).
TIP 2: If you want to use texture but you don’t like the way it looks, I suggest using, ‘repeat’.

I recommend making it a higher number along with it being the same number, otherwise it will look a bit strange and stretched.
TIP 3: Last but not least, tip 3. While using F3X, while using light, please make sure it’s point light because it’s honestly so much simpler. Once you’ve selected, ‘point light’, make the range a little larger to fill the space that you’re lighting up - obv not too bright.

I apologise if a lot of these are already stated but I just want to reach out further in a way.

I’m a builder and scripter, but here are my tips from experience with building.

  • Make sure you have Local Space on. You can get it on by right clicking any part with any move tool selected, and then press “Use Local Space”.

  • NEVER EVER use the toolbox unless the model’s maker has a check mark next to their name like this.

  • Use 0.5 or 1 stud increment to help make your buildings accurate.

  • Smoothen out things when you rotate them so that way they don’t look like this.

  • Make parts not glitch colors / textures.

And that’s about all!

  • Do not use Solid Modelling mutch. Using to mutch unions, makes your game taking longer to load.

  • Try some plugins, such as: Archimedes and F3X.

  • Try to use 0.05 radius.

  • Do not use too many visual textures.

These are my best tips, good luck!

Got this advice from a friend.
Break up flat surfaces in builds.
For example, try to not leave walls, floors or roofs just plain bricks. Add details to them.
Stuff like tiles can significantly improve your builds, and not make them look so plain.
Adding stuff like posters to walls, or other kind of details also helps.
