Any tips on how I can improve my builds?

Hey! I am working on an open-world game, and I would like some tips on how I can improve my builds! Also, if anyone has any tutorials that I could follow, that would be greatly appreciated!

Here are some references:

This is a really good starting point! Here’s some tips on how to achieve the style you’re looking for.

Deepwoken has the gross inset a little bit from the rock, as shown in the picture below:

Obviously not all areas are like this, but a good majority from what I’ve seen.

Another thing I think your build lacks is a general flow from one area to the next, and a lack of smaller steps to get onto ledges. You should definitely add some smaller rock and grass areas to get onto areas like this:

If you look in the first image I posted, there’s just a lot of terrain greebling and small rock details that really enhance the Deepwoken style.

Some other things I was noticing is just a general lack of detail regarding life and surroundings. You want the player or the user to be immersed into this land you’ve built, and a great way of doing that is adding things such as flowers, various different heights of grass, and different colors of grass too, rivers, pathways to other areas, and many types of trees and various colors of trees that match your environment.

One more thing I’d like to add is the buildings and houses. On the castle building, some stones sticking out of the wall randomly placed around would make the building pop out more and not look as flat. As far as the houses go, I didn’t see any windows or doors, or really any other details on them. Adding those things should help the build.

Hope this helps!

Is this better? Do you have any other tips?

Oh, also I noticed that when I added terrain variation to this, it was kind of just clumps in random spots, but in deepwoken, the terrain makes more sense because it actually goes somewhere, and connects the rest of the map together. Do you think that I should restart with the varied terrain in this picture, and make it more similar to deepwoken?

These builds look awesome! Good job on them! How long did it take to build all of these things? What will the game be called?

Thank you! It took a while to get this map since I restarted many times. In addition, I have been working on other aspects of the game such as scripting, vfx, etc.

The game will be called Mashle: Finale. It’s an anime game inspired by the series “Mashle: Magic and Muscles”

Thank you! These changes made a big difference in my game!

More random pieces of terrain is good in my opinion, but however; you are correct in your assertion that Deepwoken uses random pieces of terrain to connect areas together. You don’t specifically need random hills and things everywhere, but adding variation into your terrain will make it feel more real and give players different gameplay advantages, such as higher ground in combat focused scenarios, or just different levels of ground to walk across.

Yes! This is looking really good now. Adding bunches of random grass (various sizes) could also enhance this build even more in my opinion.
