What is Attack on Titan? ( anime / manga )

Attack on Titan is a Japanese anime and manga series. It takes place in the 19th century, in an alternate world. The bulk of the plot takes place on the island of Paradis, present-day Madagascar, with medieval-era technology.

The Kingdom of Humanity, the primary setting of the story, is facing a crisis from Titans. Titans are large humanoids, in general, seven to fifteen meters tall, that eat humans. The Kingdom has militarized accordingly to deal with the Titans.

Below is a fan-made synposis of the Attack on Titan series from its fanmade Wikia.

“That day, the human race remembered the terror of being dominated by them, and the shame of being held captive in a birdcage…” — Over 100 years ago, a natural predator of humanity appeared: the Titans, giant humanoid but mindless monsters whose sole purpose of existence seemed to be to devour humans. There was an insurmountable gap in power between them and mankind, and as a result, humanity was rapidly exterminated to the brink of extinction. The survivors responded by constructing three concentric walls: Wall Maria, Wall Rose and Wall Sina, which graced them with a century of peace. However, one day a Colossal Titan far larger than any other seen before breached the outer wall, allowing the smaller Titans to invade the human territory and forcing the survivors to retreat to the inner walls. Eren Jaeger, a boy whose mother was eaten during the invasion, vowed to wipe every last Titan off the face of the Earth, and joined the military determined to exact his revenge.

Does Attack on Titan: Universe follow the Attack on Titan manga / anime series?

No. The reason for this is that we want to provide more fresh and original story development and content. This also allows us more flexibility and freedom in our storytelling mission, and maintains the engagement of our plot. Reading the anime / manga does NOT give any solid advantage in lore, though it is recommended for people newer to the series in general. We use the source material of Attack on Titan in order to create stories related to its universe and setting. Because of this, we consider our content to be partially derivative of the main manga / anime series.

What is 3DMG gear?

Three dimensional maneuvering gear is a contraption designed to blend mobility and combat into one machine. In essence, it comprises of two grappling hooks (one in each hand), plus blades. Grapple can be boosted with gas, and the full set of equipment has both gas tanks and a container for additional blades.

What are “the branches”, and what do they do?

The branches are military organizations sponsored by the state. They are primary split between the Scouting Legion, Stationary Guard, or Military Police. A training academy, the Trainee Corps, is sometimes considered as a fourth branch.

  • The Trainee Corps is the academy all Cadets ( new military personnel ) go through before graduating and joining one of the other three branches. Essential concepts taught include lore, locations, and how to use various technologies ( i.e. 3DMG gear ).
  • The Scouting Legion is an organization of frontline fighters who defeat Titans by using 3DMG gear.
  • The Stationary Guard is a group of military personnel who defeat Titans from static defenses, like cannons.
  • The Military Police is the main lawkeeping force of the Kingdom. Note that in the main Attack on Titan anime / manga that they are considered to be corrupt, though there is no inherent assumption of that here in Attack on Titan: Universe.

What is the proper nomenclature for various groups and technologies on Attack on Titan: Universe?

3DMG gear. The full phrase, “three-dimension maneuvering gear”, may be used if needed or preferred. We usually do not refer to this technology as “ODMG gear” or “omnidirectional maneuvering gear”, or any other variants.
Scouting Legion. We usually do not refer to this branch of the military as “Survey Corps”. Other names, like “Scouting Regiment”, are completely incorrect.
Stationary Guard. We usually do not refer to this barnch of the military as “(the) Garrison”.
Military Police. The full phrase “Military Police Brigade” can be used at formal occasions as needed.

Does watching the anime / manga make me any better in Attack on Titan: Universe? Is it necessary that I go watch / read the anime / manga in order to enjoy this group?

No. The anime / manga series does not affect the way we conduct our lore, and has no consideration in the actions of groups in lore. However, it may be beneficial for some to watch / read the source material in order to better understand the general way our branches / other groups function.

What is a permanent death (PD) event / lore event?

In essence, a Permanent Death event is a special status in a server that can be turned on by an Administrator. When activated, it has a set of changes that occur to the game-play:

  • Player name-tags are disabled.
  • The leaderboard is disabled.
  • You will die in lore / in the story if you die while PD status is on. This includes a complete wipe of your inventory, stats, and ranks in any groups.
  • Any and all actions will count towards the lore / story.

What is metagaming?

Metagaming is using or acting on information obtained from sources outside-of-lore. This means any information that is not inside lore: information not in a lore / permanent death event, lore that was obtained from screenshots, and other information gained from sources like backend Discord groups. Metagaming can also refer to the act of giving high ranks in an organization for reasons not in role-play.
