Apocalypse Rising 2 Free to Play Announcement [Open Alpha]

Apocalypse Rising 2 will soon be Free to Play!

Please read carefully!

For the past year, the Apocalypse Rising 2 development team has been working hard on an incredible new map for the game. I will refer to this map as the “future” map from now on. Originally, our plan was to release Apocalypse Rising 2 for free when the “future” map was completed. We also wanted to include our proposed Missions system and basic Base Building with the free release. However, we are still a few months away from delivering the future map, let alone those large systems. But instead of pushing our plans back again, we’ve decided that it would be better if everyone could play Apocalypse Rising 2 now, and participate in the community as we continue improving the game into the future.

Exactly ten years after the initial release of the original Apocalypse Rising… On July 1st, 2022, Apocalypse Rising 2 will be Free for all players on PC. The game will transition to an “Open Alpha”, and it will no longer cost Robux to play.

What to expect for the Free release update:

  • VIP (private) servers will be available for free once Apoc 2 is released!

    • Custom matches and PvP arenas will be the default VIP server experience. This mode (previously known as tourney hub) allows teams of players to face-off in a deathmatch with any loadout of weapons/equipment on multiple “maps” based on in-game locations.
    • New curated “maps” for custom matches will be available, (two oil rigs connected together with spawns on either side, for example) and more will be added!
    • To wear any cosmetics in VIP servers, players must first unlock them in the main game!
  • The update itself will include a wide variety of new content and improvements.

    • A handful of small islands, structures, and locations from the “future” map will be present on the current map. The completed “future” map is still a few months away, but that won’t stop us from releasing the game!
    • Nearly 20 new firearm variants and weapons have been added, many of them being “SPECIAL”. These weapons come in many forms, and most of them can only be obtained by killing unique “Boss” Infected NPCs.
    • Dozens of new findable/unlockable cosmetics have been added, as well as color variants of many existing cosmetics.
    • The character creator UI has been improved to support the new cosmetic variants with less clutter. Related to the UI, we’re also adding a small feature that will allow players the option to toggle hair visibility, even when wearing a hat. Finally, the player character will be standing in the center of a 3D scene, similar to the original Apocalypse Rising character creator!
    • Over 15 new “random events” have been added to the map. These behave similar to helicopter crash sites, but with more variety. Players can expect to find random car crashes, hidden stashes, campsites, blockades, convoys, and more. These events can be found with a wide variety of loot, unique infected, and even rare/special cosmetics or weapons that cannot be found any other way.
  • Apocalypse Rising 2 will transition from a “Closed Alpha” to an “Open Alpha”.

    • This means when the game is made free to play, the Alpha Tester badge will no longer be obtainable.
    • Alpha testers will keep ALL cosmetics they have unlocked, even after the transition.
    • As an Alpha, Apoc 2 is still missing crucial features like Missions, and Base Building. We maintain our position that the game is still highly subject to change, but we’re looking forward to growing with our new community of players!

What to expect in future updates after the free release:

  • First and foremost, with VIP servers and private matches becoming available, we plan to add more curated “maps” for players to fight on. While some of these maps will be resemble existing locations in the live game, we also want to experiment and try new things. This is just the beginning for custom VIP server experiences!
  • We’ve been working to transition to Roblox’s Streaming service, which will significantly improve performance for the client and the server. If you have trouble running Apoc 2, this should help a lot! You can expect this to be one of our first priorities after the free release!
  • The “future” map is expected to be completed within a few months after the free release. It will be about the same size as the current map, except with more attention to detail, and less water between locations.
  • We plan to expand our vehicle, firearm, and melee weapon systems to be more versatile. Specifically, we need to add vehicle upgrades, we need to better support certain firearm animations, and melee weapons need to have more interest.
  • Working on our Missions and Base Building system will be long-term priorities. We can’t wait to show you what we have in mind later on down the line, but we have some things to finish first!
  • Besides all that, we also plan to start having gameplay events based around holidays and other celebrations. For example, we had an awesome Christmas event last year that we hope to repeat, among other ideas.

Not everything went according to plan, and I’m sorry it took this long to get here. The game isn’t as complete as we had hoped it would be, but we couldn’t stand to let another Summer go by without giving everyone the opportunity to play! We’re very excited for what the future holds, and we can’t wait to continue improving the game with all of the feedback from so many new players!
