Hey! I was wondering if it’s appropriate to use google transalate to reply to foreign topics. The reason I ask this is if a incident that happened to someone, which I would not like to bring up. People might say using google transalate is “disrespectful” is it? And is it against any of the rules? I’ve been holding this thought back for so long. Some of the post in the foreign topics are better than English ones (in my opinion)! Thanks in advance.
Just a warning that Google Translate completely butchers many languages and your message may appear broken and strange. The general message will come across but the grammar and tense (especially in the love languages) will most likely be messed up.
Not being allowed to use translation services to reply to posts would be an odd rule to have since it would limit the ability for more knowledgable people about a topic to help others. The only limitations you will have is grammar being odd or the wrong words used to translate (as KardashianKlan mentioned). Adding onto it, there may be cultrual things missed with machine translations. As an example, several Spanish translators I hired before said they use the English equivalent of “Burn” to talk about Dodgeball.
I wouldn’t recommend trying to post with a language such using “Google Translate” that you have no clue of. Which your post would be much more confusing and making it whoever is reading the post making them much confused of getting the point of your post.
Well, I think it would be fine… But Google Translate does tend to often go off topic with it’s translations. Most of the times it will be confusing for people who fluently speak that language to actually understand you.
You can, but I would like to inform you that it may sometimes be wrong.
It’s not against the rules although I would recommend not to since Google Translate can be wrong at times and it might be quite confusing to some people because it might just output random words that don’t go together or don’t sound right together.
It’s not really against the rules, but I would tread carefully around that. Translate isn’t necessarily 100% reliable and can’t assume the intention of your words. You might end up saying something you shouldn’t.
On the other hand, to be off-topic a bit here, translating foreign threads into English roughly with translate and polishing them is pretty neat. There are some surprising things in the foreign categories that aren’t received in the general/English categories, such as an entire SQL database tutorial.
If we are continuing into the location scenario would I be able to select my language in my profile and be able to see all the entries in the DevForum in my own language or is that just a dream I am having.
