This is something that probably has confused quite a lot of people, or at least me. Are selling buildings or scripting services on ROBLOX actually allowed or would that be against ROBLOX Terms and rules.
For example, some Person offers 1000 Robux to a builder for a City. Would this be allowed, is it not or are there really no rules on this matter. And if it is, How would Roblox react on a situation when someone gets scammed or even Tricked to build or script something for another in order to get a reward.
This is probably not a direct building question, but it might be a question some developers are quite unsure of and I think it is important to clear it out. Tell me what you know of this, Thanks!
I make 99% of my devex money through commission builds that people hire me to do, I have never had an issue with DevExing the money earned from selling my maps and builds to others.
When I first started out, yes a LOT. I now strictly work for more ‘known’ people, like ones on the DevForums where they’re more trustable rather then random people.
Some other things:
I like to write a simple contract if I am the one paying via PayPal if the value is over, say, $150 and it has to include the buyers signature. That way if they rip you off or scam you can contact PayPal they can look into the situation and possibly get your money returned. This has saved me on two occasions. Same thing with just building for others if the value is high, make sure you have a written agreement so you both know what is to be expected as the end result.
Never go first. If you build it, and they said they like it, then they should be more then willing to pay the money first. It’s impossible for you to rip them off as you already build/coded what they wanted, however they can rip you off by not paying you.
Only work for trusted people, as I mentioned before.
Don’t work in TC with randoms or even with the commissioner unless you have 110% trust that they will not download copies along the way.
That’s just a few tips I have that has saved me a lot of grief and headache over the past few years building for others. I mean even if you build a place or model for someone and they try to scam and say ‘I’m not paying you’, you still have something that someone else might want to buy.
The way Roblox has been dealing with this is that they tolerate it, but with the understanding that if you get cheated you can’t go to them for legal action. Your business deals are considered third party unless it’s a contract from Roblox (then more paperwork is involved of course).
As for being scammed, don’t expect Roblox to punish the person either. The exception to this is if they’re a dev here, they risk being kicked for unprofessional/unethical practice.
Roblox will then be able to take down their game and account if you caught them stealing your place. Had that happen to me twice, usually Roblox is pretty good about taking the stolen content down.
And honestly if they did still the map and where making heavy profit, leak it. Sometimes you need to sink the ship to kill the captain. Sad it might come to that but there’s not a whole lot you can do in those situations.
That’s why you should only do business with trusted people, unfortunately.
There is a large number of exploits that are able to steal models and save them on their pc. They can’t steal server scripts or anything not shown to the client, but they can also steal local scripts on the client.
I did not have this issue because if I did sell services, it would be scripts, and they need both client and server ends to make it work. But when it comes to maps, they could take the whole thing.
Leaking it won’t do much either, because if the map was wanted, someone else would steal it and leak it anyways I would assume. Regardless of it hurting the person or not, it doesn’t get you anything.
I think an option is to report and hope roblox does something about it so that it doesn’t affect other people, but that again doesn’t get you your payment. It’s a bad situation to be in so just be cautious with people I guess
Its a nice idea but impractical. People change, it won’t stop them the first time for sure, probably will be a while before caught, just get a different account if you’re backlisted, and people will be reported to defame them
Thought about this alot aswell. It’s a similar situation to buying and selling groups, but that is made clear in the roblox rules, that it is prohibited. To be fair roblox could use a list of things which are permitted to be sold.
That doesn’t always save you though. I was working with a guy, he was supposed to do some coding for me. He was halfway done, and it was getting near the end of the month, and needed about 3/4 of the Commission’s pay to be able to DevEx for the month. I was like, well, I see you’ve got work down, and not that much further to go, sure, whatever. He was a DevForum member, so I felt I could trust him. Well, a week later, I noticed he was a DevForum member no longer, he account went dead silent, and he blocked me on Discord. I was dumbfounded, considering the guy even had a really big game under his belt. Then that game suddenly switched to a group being held by another account, which also blocked me… Hmmm…
Do you think this is a topic ROBLOX or ROBLOX Staff should bring up themselves and talk about, or even go further by setting up a system for it because honestly I think this is something inevitable and something most ROBLOX players who are into group, games or development does.
I think your questions have been answered quite adequately already, don’t see the need for a staff response. If you sell stuff that will be used in a game and you get paid for that, that R$ will most likely be devexable as it is obtained from bona fide development sources. Roblox won’t get involved in your agreements with other developers if they do not uphold their deals. This is for your own account.
