Are we allowed to require accounts to play games?

I’ve seen various Roblox games require third-party accounts to play games. These games don’t allow you to play without signing up on a off-site website. I have been interested in doing this in my game.

Is this against Roblox Terms of Service?

Example below:

If I’m not mistaken some users can’t see social media links. So this would probably be against TOS.

Well, you can’t even mention Discord in chat nor ingame so it is definitely against TOS.

Also, it is encouraging people under 13 to go onto Discord, which is then a breach of Discord’s TOS on top of Roblox’s TOS

From Roblox Community Standards:

Directing Users Off-Platform
When using Roblox, you may not link to any external websites or services, except for : YouTube, Facebook, Discord, Twitter, and Twitch. Links to any of those approved sites must be wrapped in the applicable Policy API or listed in the Social Networks and Social Links settings of your profile or experience description page. Links that appear in locations where the API cannot be deployed - such as text chat - are prohibited. Any other links are prohibited, including:

  • Links that contain Roblox-inappropriate content
  • Partial links, filter-breaking, and permitted website links to non-permitted websites
  • Encouraging others to visit unpermitted external links

For their privacy and safety, we don’t permit users under 13 to share links.

The chat filter is different from the moderation games get, I wouldn’t make that assumption. Roblox even allows games to add Discord links directly to their game’s page.

In the RCS, the work link means URL in every other section, so I assume it means a literal link, not a conceptual one.

In a way it seems like they’re okay with this, because they say discord is a permitted site, then say:

Encouraging others to visit unpermitted external links [is prohibited]

Which implies encouraging users to visit permitted external links is probably okay.

You can add Discord links to your game’s page, so I don’t see a problem with encouraging people to join through Discord.

They might have a problem with under 13 users though, but realistically I don’t think that’s a huge problem. If it becomes one you can just add a hacky >13 check.

Even logos of off-platform things are considered in breach of the RCS, so it is definitely not exclusively for URLs

This case seems to be very unnusual as the game doing this is actually owned by a fairly large Roblox group, if this is against Roblox’s Terms of Service it appears to be unexpected that the game has received no punishment or problems from Roblox staff.
