Avatar Page & 3D View UX Issue

For the past few years on the Roblox platform, I’ve occasionally experienced temporary freezing on my web browser and in some severe cases, my entire PC, that lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes at most and it’s the result of the prolonged usage of doing avatar related changes on the Roblox website. The first few times I have experienced this, I have always thought that it would be addressed soon as I considered it somewhat of a severe, easily noticeable minor issue but no… the freezing behavior has pretty much existed the same way for a long time but not forever. I mean, I certainly don’t remember the avatar page freezing in the old days. I decided to report it today because I did some cosplay outfit shopping and experienced the freezing phenomena a lot which got on my nerves, it was the last straw.

What’s frustrating is I do not know of the exact conditions or reproduction steps to replicate the behavior that I am experiencing; and I’m no computer scientist or software engineer which makes it even harder for me to understand the cause of the behavior I am experiencing. However, I can say that doing what I do may result in the freezing behavior.

Here are actions that may result in my web browser freezing a few seconds to minutes:

  • Equipping/Unequipping items on the avatar page.

  • Creating/Deleting/Renaming/Updating/Equipping/Unequipping saved character creations (“outfits” in old roblox terminology) on the avatar page.

  • Viewing lots of avatar items on their respected pages consecutively or at the same time in 3D view.

It’s important to note three things which is that:

  • I do not experience the freezing pheneomena each and every single time I do an avatar related change or use the 3D viewing feature - it just often happens, not always.

  • The freeze duration is not constant, it fluctuates. The impact on my device (web browser freezing/entire PC freezing) also fluctuates as well.

  • I’m not so sure on this one as I haven’t tried this many times to verify, so, take it with a grain of salt, but caching my web browser, clearing my cookies, restarting my web browser process seems to be a short-lived workaround to the issue. When done, it’ll allow me to experience the intended behavior for a short period. After viewing a few items, the behavior will begin again.

Some POC videos of the described issue: Freezing POC - Google Drive.

If this behavior is intended, apologies for the bug report but I would appreciate some information as to why the freezing phenomena occurs as a developer lacking knowledge in CS, software engineering and such fields.

Web Browser & System Info:

Web Browser: Microsoft Edge
Version 125.0.2535.92 (Official build) (64-bit)

System Information:
CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz
Memory: 16.0 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU

Expected behavior

I expect seamless - delay lacking (about/almost instant), avatar page usage and 3D view usage.

Does the universal app work as a workaround?

I haven’t looked into that. However, I do experience the freezing phenomona on mobile as well on my SamsungM51 device.

I’d prefer not to observe the universal app behavior as I never intend on using the universal app, so I find exploring it meaningless for me. I’m a user who just uses the website and mobile app.

If anyone else reading this topic reply wants to explore, feel free, go ahead, I refuse to do it.

There shouldn’t be a need to explore, just boot up the app and click on this button:

Lmk if this works as a workaround as your primary problem in the original topic was the website was freezing your computer, and this may help you customize your avatar in the meantime!

It works like a charm, thanks for the suggestion. It’s an absolutely amazing workaround!

Everything is so instant on the universal app - it seems to work as intended. There’s no long noticeable delay in equipping/unequipping items and 3D viewing. The behavior I’m experiencing on the universal app is the exact opposite of what I experienced on the website!

I think the mobile app is supposed to be the same way as the universal app as well, but I think my device hardware is just not that capable enough to handle the mobile app or that the mobile app needs optimization.

Once again thank you! I’ll definitely do avatar related changes on the universal app for now while I wait for the website experience to be improved!
