I’ll make an announcement in the public section with more info.

HELP PLEASE NO - from a purely selfish perspective that’d ruin my chances of getting a good name-snipe and it’d go to some random noob instead

The issue with public is morons from the ROBLOX main forums. I just want a short name that’s clever.

Don’t you think developers should be warned that underscore names might break their games? And give them time to fix it?

Yes, I agree: I was just making a selfish point - for the “greater good” it is a far better idea that everyone’s warned about it ahead of time.

Post in public but no blog post until after say 2 days after release? Gives it a more silent update but you still make it known eventually. I’m just worried users will make bots to snag the new names.

Yeah - bots are terrible. Chances are people will just ‘park’ names and then there’ll be no point in the update at all, so making it a ‘silent update’ may be better.

Hopefully the necessary precautions will be taken so that players won’t be able to hoard 1000 different accounts/usernames with name snipes (as easily) ie. requiring an email to create an account

Everything I read about this says that usernames can have just one underscore. Is there some reason why having more than one underscore won’t be supported?

It’s very uncommon for sites to allow underscores at all. The main use case is to support Firstname_Lastname style usernames. We want to do that and open up more possible names. With two underscores the usernames would look less like names and more like ascii art or gibberish.

Another issue is that more variation adds levels of complexity and maintenance we don’t want to take on. For example, we have a usernames blacklist. We have been adding bad names involving underscores, because an underscore can be used in many places to represent a vowel. It’s a lot of regex to write and test, and add as new bad names become popular. It’s just not worth it for us to add complexity at this time.

Will you be freeing up old usernames? I’d kill to have ‘Script’

If it’s a regex, I prey for the people maintaining it :stuck_out_tongue:

Hopefully it’s not as hard as parsing E-Mails by regexp though…

I’d kill to have ‘User’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Nah the real goal is to have “LocalPlayer”

CAN YOU THINK OF THE ADMIN EXPLOITING POSSIBILITIES!? LOL Omg it’d be chaos.

property names are indexed before child names, like how you can’t put a value object inside another when they’re both called “Value” and index the child by its name, because the parent has a property called “Value.”

findFirstChild(“Value”)?

game.Players:FindFirstChild(“LocalPlayer”) would get you the player with the name “LocalPlayer”, but I doubt you will find that line of code anywhere in a script.

awareness bump

Just wondering if there’s any update with a (moderately) specific time we can look out for this feature?
