Black hole light distortion effect

So the idea is simple but the execution is complicated. I am trying to make a black hole and thought maybe I could add the nice light distortion effect that they have around them, I used glass because it also warps light but it doesn’t look appealing, any tips or other ideas?

Literally impossible unless you want to have 0 FPS on a Nasa PC

is there a workaround for atleast a good effect “around” the black hole? or maybe make the glass invisible but still have the warp effect, idk…

Unfortunately not possible. I tried something like this years ago and it just never worked. I hope roblox adds distortion effects one day.

Would probably cause intense performance issues.

Honestly, I don’t think its even possible at all really.

Hi While we cant really simulate rays of light in roblox, We could approximate it , Theres a unity asset that make that possible, and theres 2 option on that, either a cubemap or ScreenSpace reflection, the latter is already possible as with roblox’s water.

how do i go about using these things?

you cant, Both of these are locked by roblox Ie you cannot put your own

Follow up: i achieved the desired effect with an inverted sphere mesh with transparency at 1 and material glass.

That looks pretty cool. Keep in mind, users with their graphics set too low won’t see the refraction the glass offers!

true but they will still see the reflectancy off the skybox, which in this case gives off the most effect

Ik this post is 2 years ago, but I was able to make one using highlight glitches. I even made an accretion disk version which acts almost like Interstellar

This is beautiful, an amazing display of design and creativity.

This is amazing! Is the accretion disc fully flat?

Could you show us what properties you used to achieve this effect?

Yes it is. You had to use parts or meshes tho bc decals dont work

Very simple

  1. Insert an inverted sphere
  2. Insert a highlight into the inverted sphere
  3. Disable the highlight
  4. Inverted sphere transparency >1
