Blender Building Tips

Im brand new to blender, all I’ve managed to achieve are a few basic swords, but I’d like some building tips to help me make better creations. Screenshots below of a few works I made, all I can really do is use the modeling tab for more complex things.

It looks like you’ve used the right tools to make those swords. You just need to use reference pictures and learn how to separate your model into different parts to allow for the individual customization of parts of the mesh.

Here are a few tips that could help you out:

Instead of using the ‘modelling’ tab, just switch between edit and object mode in the default tab using TAB, much faster

  1. Learn the basic shortcuts to Blender. They’ll speed up your workflow quite a bit. Try to use the shortcuts instead of the toolbar on the left.
    Here are a few shortcuts that I most commonly use:
    S to scale
    G to grab
    R to rotate
    CTRL+B to bevel
    K to use the knife tool
    E to extrude
    I to inset
    ALT+E to extrude along normals (in the direction the faces are facing)
    G+G to edge slide
    CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S (yes thats a ‘shortcut’) to shear
    CTRL+R to loop cut
    R+R to freely rotate
    SHIFT+S to reset the 3-D cursor, or move it to an object (point where new objects get added)
    Z to quickly change views
    C to activate the circle select tool (hold click to select, mmb to deselect
    M To merge vertices
    CTRL+A to apply scale
    ALT+ G and ALT+R to reset location and rotation to their default state

If you dont remember how to do something, use the F3 Menu, and search it up

  1. Add deformity. In 3D modelling, the more broken and deformed something is, the better it will look, as in real life you dont get incredibly smooth edges, perfect shapes etc.

    For example, with a fence:
    Without deformity:


    With Deformity:

    (This is a very crude example, but the slight unevenness adds some depth and realism to the object)

I know this sounds kinda dumb, but how would I deform things?

Use the proportional editor!

You can either click the circle in the top of the screen, or press O.

Then, set the graph shape to whatever you want (random can work), and perform any operation (moving works best), and use your scroll wheel to adjust the area or impact.
