Blender PBR Looks Different Than In Studios

image

I’ve been experimenting with PBR lately and decided to do a quick test. The first image is how the texture looks like while in Blender, and the second one is how it looks in Studios while using material variants.

I’ve carefully gone over which maps I used for the PBRs, and both the texture on Blender and the material variant in Studios are using the exact same ones, but look really different.

The one in Blender is really reflective while the one in Studios isn’t as so, but they’re using the same Roughness map so it doesn’t make sense at all.

Any help is appreciated.

First off I am a big fan of PBR textures. Second, this could be because of brick color, displacement from Blender not transferring over, or that the plane you are using in Blender is not flat like the brick in Studio. Also, since material variants are still relatively new and the limitations of Roblox and its PBR compatibility (i.e. not having the ability to use .exr file formats for normal textures).

I for instance have used PBRs just recently and found that it is best to port whatever you want to be textured directly from Blender with the texture already applied.

I, however, can infer that you might want to use more than just blender meshes with this texture, so this would not always be a fix. Blender can also be weird with wrapping textures and can make things look messy if you don’t select the faces you want to fix in edit mode, press U, and select Unwrap.

Hope this helped! I can add additional information if you would like.

I tried changing the color property of the mesh, but apparently, it doesn’t affect it at all since it has a surface appearance. Also for the displacement map, I just used for the metallic map as it seemed to fit well while I was still using the material variants inside Roblox.

I guess I might try redoing it with another mesh, but I’m unsure currently. In the first image, the gaps between the stone bricks are supposed to be a lot darker, but turn out the opposite. Could it just be the textures/maps I’m using or something?

I’m very new to PBR stuff, so I really appreciate your response

I only learned PBR textures on Blender yesterday, and I was an early adopter of the material variance, but it might just be a bad texture. But before you go changing it, try my advice of texturing directly from Blender as that seems to work much better.

If you do go looking for another texture, try https://polyhaven.com and freepbr.com. These have worked well for me, but they are limited because its free.

Also, Roblox might not have full displacement support since that takes a lot of GPU power, especially from the average PC user with a GTX 1060 or mobile users, as well as consoles.

I redid the texture (on the right) and it appears identical to the material variant. I guess the mesh was just a bit weird or I just did it wrong in the first place. Thanks for your help anyways though

No problem, but I do think it might be that mesh. Roblox appears to not like the angles and the lengths of each face (the ones that are being stretched) and is messing it up. I hope I helped you learn some things about PBRs, and don’t stop using them since this is a very weird situation and most of the time they go smoothly.

Yeah, I’m still in the process of learning how to do textures and stuff properly, and I plan on continuing so. Definitely would be a lot more convenient if my PC could run like Adobe substance painter but unfortunately, it can’t. So I’ll have to stick to Blender for now.
