Bot Jam - Feedback appreciated

I’d like some feedback on this very early game. I am primarily interested in feedback about the gameplay, whether it’s engaging and fun. I am not focusing on graphics, animations, GUI etc just yet (not even a decent game icon), but feel free to share some feedback/suggestions as well.

Before I invest time and money polishing it I want to make it fun to play. I don’t have an age group in mind yet besides the broad 7 and above (yes, I do want to create more challenging levels where strategy plays a bigger role).

Bonus is if you want to play doubles (two players against the robots).

Let me know how many rounds you last.

I don’t want to be rude but for me this is not engaging enough.
Because it is not having large impact, the player like to have impact at the game like creating destruction, explosion and it pacing is slow.

(I think the game Idea isn’t that unique and I wouldn’t invest time in it

I suggest you check out this guy video on game design:

Best regard!

That’s a great tip, I appreciate it.
I can see how I have not surfaced in an interesting way the different opportunities that rise as the boards are taken, such as taking back bases or surrounding enemy bases. Or when to use speed vs recovery.

Btw, yes, this game itself is not unique. This is a detour I’m taking on another game I built around coloring the world. I wanted to bring action to it, such as the fight between an expanding black & white world versus the colored world. This little game was just to try out ideas to later incorporate into the main game.

Thanks a lot.

ignore that guy I think the game idea is pretty good as long as your not spending a bunch of money working on it you should also add tags so your game can be found

Thanks. I’ve learned about tags indirectly from another dev here and I will try it out.

And the whole idea of doing a very simple game is to just learn more about each step of the way. Like right now I am trying different things to just see if people open the details page (thanks Roblox for showing lots of metrics!)

Thanks for the support.

Here’s an updated screenshot since I incorporated some of the feedback I got from the forum (much appreciated!)
A lobby, a better way to indicate the two teams one can join, and a leaderboard. I haven’t added more bots with additional strategies yet since I’m currently working on “perks” or powers to let players go beyond the initial rounds before being defeated by the bots.

Thanks for all feedback!
I spent time watching some kids play the game and got some insights on what needed to be changed. Among them was the need to provide feedback whether the player had won the round and was going to the next round, or whether the bots had won the game.
Here are the screens that are displayed at the end of each round. Notice how the colors change to reflect which team had won the round (there can be up to two players per team).
It still needs lots of improvements, so feedback is appreciated again.

What’s the general goal of the game? Like, what are you meant to do?

If you’re familiar with the board game GO, it’s inspired on it. Basically you take places in a board using strategy (and some perks, in the future) to compete with smarter and smarter bots, or against humans.
I just came up with the first level but I see potential to expand it to many different challenges, always based on a “pseudo” board. For example, I’m thinking that if you can complete 10 rounds beating the bots, then you get to level 2 with more challenges (and perks/power-ups).

I also want to introduce a social aspect, for example, a second level could be like an arena where you can invite friends to team up with you or to cheer in the stands (meaning, the more “cheering” the more bonus the player get).

It’s been 6 months since I last posted an update. Much has changed including new graphics, a NPC mech that follows the player (for levels 3 and up) and can help the player, in-game sales of limited items from the market place.

What I really need though is feedback on the game play. I don’t feel the game is engaging enough nor is it retaining players. Perhaps the mechanic is not clear? Perhaps a lack of visual clue of what’s going on in the board? Or the fact that it’s not obvious how challenging it can be to keep beating the bots?

Any feedback is really appreciated!

End of 2023 was a period of many changes. I am very grateful for so great feedback from different fellow devs, in particular @Kittylitterking123 and @PeZsmistic .

There was the introduction of a very brief tutorial, many different tile sizes, different challenges for players, such as flamethrower drones, laser gun turrets, fireballs, night games and more.

There are new accessories (jet packs) that allow faster player movements for faster rounds.

Here are some screen shots of some of the changes.

As always, feedback is greatly appreciated in particular at this time where I’m embarking in doing some A/B testing for more radical changes to game play, scenarios, layout etc.
