Bring back Website Parties

This is not anything developer related, it’d just be a quality of life upgrade to not only me, but to a lot of people who enjoy gaming with a group of people on Roblox.

“Parties” was a feature implemented to make playing games with multiple friends on Roblox easier. It would ask you to invite your friends to a Roblox group chat, which then allowed you to start parties, ensuring that every single user in it would be on the same server upon joining a game, resulting in a flawless and fun gaming experience.

However, this feature was removed as of 2019 to “modernize” the platform. If anything, it was simply a huge step down for the platform as a whole, making playing with friends a lot harder, ESPECIALLY when you want to play a game with not many available player slots, as one-player servers tend to get full rather quickly in most cases.

I was wondering if parties could ever be re-considered, since it was such a small feature, but it improved quality of life by a long mile for cases mentioned above.

Thank you for taking your time to read this post!

POST RDC 2024 UPDATE: Hey! Maybe this forum post actually worked!

Honestly, removing this feature was such a backwards decision (though not all that surprising at this point), would be great to have it back.

I concur, I’d love to see this make a return!

I used to keep forgetting that whenever I pressed “join party” that meant I would automatically be brought into the same game server as the rest of the party . I don’t think this feature ever worked on mobile though. Chat parties and the chat sound were both removed at the same time iirc. They both deserve to be added back honestly.

Group chats are still a feature, parties within group chats aren’t.

The problem with the original party system is that the UX around following the party leader was uh, not tidy.

If the party leader joined a game, the website would trigger a gamejoin request, this in its original form was also bad because you could be forcefully removed from a game.

The enforcement where browsers require user feedback to start an application protocol (unless you grant it to always allow roblox-player), also throws a spanner into the implementation. Each user would have to reconfirm the launch of the protocol to follow the leader. This is likely why it was removed.

If Roblox are to bring this back, it would be better to have it be a CoreScript that works in-game, then tracks the leader based on where they are. Party members are then prompted if they want to follow the leader.

Totally agree. What you pointed out was the precise negative of the old party system. Would love to see it implemented in a way users have to confirm they want to switch games/join the game selected.

Pressing Join is not hard.

Multiple friends joining one friend? No problem! Just communicate where you want to go in roblox group chats, discord group chats, or a discord call. Or just say where you want to go ingame (if you switched servers or games).

Even if this was added back, I would never use it. It seems like terrible UX to be forced out of a game and into one you didn’t agree on playing, because the “leader” wanted to play it.

Sure, pressing join is not hard, but what if you want to play popular games with friends on servers that don’t have many player slots?

I myself find it very hard to play games like flee the facility with my group of 3 friends (not including myself), since the game only has 5 player slots and it tends to fill super quickly after just a singular person joins. What would you suggest me to do? Keep server hopping for 30 minutes until we get tired and decide not to play anymore? That’s the frustrating part about this entire situation.

As mentioned by metatablecat earlier on in this thread:

Just make it so whenever the party leader joins a game, other party members are promptly asked if they also want to join the game, instead of radically switching out of the blue.

Not everyone has discord or social media platforms, especially kids under 13 years of age.

A lot of games have a similar system implemented for parties. Rainbow Six Siege, Hypixel, etc. Roblox’s old party system could be improved upon, but its not a bad concept nonetheless.

I remember this, and I actually used it! I don’t remember it going probably because they improved friend joining a lot at the time

While you could just do that, parties made it sure that there were enough space in the server to allow everyone in the party to join. With many games, it’s difficult to find a server that could fit 3+ players all-together, without using any external communication servers.

Presumably people wouldn’t be joining random parties, so they could easily leave a chat if that was an issue.

I sure do miss this feature, so many fond memories were made in these party chats. I really wish they’d bring them back! Was there a reason in the first place why it was removed or was it simply the site trying to modernize??? The feature as super useful since you could communicate with multiple people, like if you had a dev team or just a group of friends you wanted to hang out with. Now it feels like you HAVE to go to 3rd party platforms to communicate efficiently with a group of multiple people.
