Builder's Block

I’m currently working on a game at the moment that has the foundation of the game in tact, but I’m totally not sure on how I want to go about building the map for this game. Whether what kind of stores that I want to have, or just the basic pathways to getting there.

I’m inspired to make the map a floating Island, but sill… No clue on how I’m going to achieve this world. I’ve gone on different platforms to find inspiration, but barely find anything.

Is there anything you do when feeling stuck in the building process?

I always brainstorm all my ideas on paper, and when I find an idea I like, I just use that one.

Be sure to use concept art as well! They are my best friend.

Here’s a lifesaver:
Grey boxing

Block out your map using extremely simple shapes, get the design you want; you can go as wild as you want with it. Make sure the layout is playable, easy to manouvre around and overall showcasing what will be the most beautiful parts of your map when you get to detailing the layout.

I also suggest looking up reference images, and going into more games. You’re bound to find inspiration that way and it will overall assist in detailing the grey box.

Grey boxing and reference images have personally saved me from builder’s block multiple times, and have allowed me to create maps I’m pretty proud of.
