Building Improvement

Hello, I’ve come seeking tips on how to enhance my skills. I’ve recently embarked on small projects, particularly with my little shop. I’m keen to identify areas for improvement but am struggling to pinpoint specific aspects. Therefore, I’ve decided to seek diverse perspectives here. If anyone has insights or suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate it.

I think it’s pretty nice for what it is. Yeah, it looks rather simple but you did a nice job of adding depth so even though it is a box, it doesn’t feel like one.

If the shop is meant to stand alone or on a corner, perhaps you could do something to the sides (more windows, a back door, perhaps an AC unit) and top (power generator, power lines, etc.) but it all depends on what you are going for. It’s fine as is if it is to be used as a base for several other builds.

I like it very much, but I would suggest to add some spot lights at the front of the shop to make it bright. Also some nature would be great as it will make it very realistic (if you’re looking to make it realistic).

Also, a sign would be great, you may include the shop name… etc. Also, to make it more realistic you can add some decals as graffitis if you want to give it a alley. I’m not sure what do you want to sell in the shop, but also some mirrors as decoration will make it unique.

I would love to see this project finished as it looks very nice!

I would ensure that your windows are evenly spaced and sized. They look a little inconsistent with each window.

A good way to do this is using a basic part as a “ruler” of sorts to measure length or distance in studs so you can match it across your build. If you want evenly spaced windows, measure the distance between each window and follow that across the build. Same goes with size.

My biggest tip towards improvement is learning ways to fully optimize. For example, this build would benefit the most through learning surface appearance and custom texture making in order to convert those small box details on the gray part to a normal map. Performance plays a key role in most games, and it helps expand your skillset and abilities.

Keep learning, continue growing, its a whole process.

This tool allows you to make normal maps from height maps (you can also turn any texture grayscale to achieve a proper effect): Materialize

And I personally recommend this resource for finding realistic textures. All of them are free for use in games as per their TOS: SketchUpTextureClub
