The title says it all. I encountered an issue when I was working on my game and posted a topic in #help-and-feedback:building-support and it hasn’t been solved. I need it solved or what would take me 20 minutes to do for a game is going to take days, so my question is this: Is it ever “ok” to bump an unsolved post? Responding with something like “Tried several different workarounds, which were these (examples), and still unsolved.”
It is never acceptable to bump any thread. If you are adding new information to the thread such as including a new attempt you’ve made that’s been unsuccessful (include as much details as possible so others can see exactly what you’ve tried and work with that or provide their own solution) or continuing discussion of a topic, that is not a bump.
A bump is only a bump if it’s not adding any value to the thread and only serves to push the post back to the top. If you are posting an update or something new you’ve tried, you’re fine.
I think that’s a semantic argument, and arguably a pointless one, but I disagree. Bumping is technically just defined as to “post on (an inactive thread) in order to move it to the top of the list of active threads.” Necroposting is a term used more for just the non-constructive bumps, but it’s a silly distinction either way.
The rules are clear no matter how you interpret the definition of the word, at least:
You should only reply to older topics if you have significant new information to add to the discussion.
So, from the way I understand it, if I post a problem and it stays unsolved I have to go outside of the devforum to find the answer instead of bumping/making duplicate posts?
Ultimately I think this is a pretty strange nitpicking of what I’m saying based on the wording I used, but if the distinction matters that much enough to have called upon me to say so, then I apologise for using the wrong wording?
What matters primarily is the spirit of the information I’ve put forth in that posts that add no value to the thread are not welcome, however if your post adds information or discussion to the topic at hand, including a substantial update to your own thread, then it is okay to post.
I think the confusion comes from using “bumping” with a negative connotation while saying valid bumps are not bumps, bumping always means reviving an old topic regardless of intention. I don’t think @posatta’s post is necessarily pedantic, but rather what do you call it when a valid bump is made, if it isn’t a bump.
I understand now, thanks for explaining. I’ll be sure to refrain from using the word “bump” to refer to any such posts in the future.
