I want to make a horror game but i’m not sure if I can actually use the normal characters in the game. Can I do that? If not can I change them up a little to not be exact? Same with weapons. Any support would be great!
In short:
Copying Characters but changing the game (Such as using Angry Birds in a Tycoon game)- You’ll probably be alright.
Copying gameplay but with different-ish characters (Such as Typical Colors 2)- You’ll be alright.
Copying characters AND gameplay- You’ll run into legal issues. Don’t do this.
Copying a Roblox Game- Your Roblox reputation will get hit bad. Do this if you wish.

Any time you use something that has a copyright then you can run into problems.
For instance I had a place with the name Formula One in the title and it got removed. There was nothing inside the game that was copyrighted but even after appealing and promising to change the name I was not allowed to reopen the game.

Even though it was the only item in the game trademarked or copyrighted and I explained that I would remove the name from my experience title I wasn’t allowed to use my entire experience.

it rlly depends on copyright for example if you copy a skin from like mario you will get in trouble but for example if u copied a skin from sega and made game non profitable than you would be fine and another example if u just used a character that is not copyrighted you will be fine with weapons if they are irl weapons than yes it is fine cuz you cannot copyright it but if u mean like ussing someone’s model than its not fine unless they give permission
Many games do this by changing little things here and there, including the name.
It’s pretty much an issue of: “can I get caught” most of the time. In short: you can brand the character different with the same themes. Either colors or shape (pick your poison) and then change the name to really sell it out. Take Shindo life for example. They just rebranded the names and it was completely fine to keep the game up and running, or All star tower defense.
