Can I use UGC for my game?

Can I use UGC accessories in my game? I don’t see many people asking this questions but I am basically making a character creator for my game and want to know if I can use UGC accessories like hairs etc for it. The only post I found is this one: Using UGC Hair in my game which doesn’t seem to be of any help.

Yes, as far as I know. nobody has been punished for using UGC in their games and many games with avatar editors use UGC from other creators.

TLDR: You’ll most likely be fine as I don’t think anybody has ever been punished for this.

Sorry for replying late, so I can use ugc hairs in my game in the character creator.

Yes, because Roblox said they were gonna prohibt devs from adding catalog items to their games but decided not to because of backlash.

is there any statement anywhere? just so that i can make sure that this is the case. Because i’m also trying to use a UGC, and it’s a bundle.

there are many games that use ugc

Great example: catalog avatar creator

Sorry to bump the topic, but I believe you can. I was trying to find the same answer a while ago and I came across this in the Terms of Use:

Please let me know if I’m misinterpreting it, as I took this as a yes.

You’re right but the thing is that would using public ugc bring down some reputation of my game? My game has all of its assets handmade and it has a character creator system as well. Basically it’s suppose to be a professional game rather than some lazily made thing and I really don’t know if using UGC would ruin the reputation or not. Because I am already using roblox’s own ugc and I am starting to make hair accessories as well but this is obviously very tedious to do.

In my game I have a credits board that shows the names of all of the people who created UGC that is present on NPCs, and even though it isn’t stated that there needs to be credit, I still do it to show respect for the person who actually crafted it.

Personally I wouldn’t consider it to be scummy as long as you have a little area that shows credit, but opinions may vary depending on who you’re talking to.

It really depends on the person, but most of the time people are fine with it as long as you ask them / give credit somewhere

I could do that but still using UGC doesn’t feel good… maybe I’ll just make it myself. I don’t want to credit anyone.

I usually reach out to the UGC creator themselves and ask for permission. In my experience most are happy to grant it so long as you make the items purchasable in some way in-game.

Legally speaking I haven’t read anywhere that you are protected to use UGC without permission - if you do, you’re kind of banking on nobody caring enough to make it a problem, which imo is not a good way to go about things. As I said though - most I’ve talked too are pretty flexible so long as you make sure this rising tide lifts both boats. As a bonus - whenever someone buys UGC in your game you get a cut as well, so it’s a win-win!

This just tells us that using UGC is allowed if the creator marks it as such. I’m wondering whether there’s a way for us to view when the creators allow their items to be used.

How do you reach out to creators? I tried many times but most have their messages/friend requests disabled.

Usually discord and twitter in my experience, however I admit it’s not always convenient - unfortunately not being able to contact the creator doesn’t give permission to use their work, so it’s kind of a rock and a hard place situation.
