Hey, I have a really small side project I’m interested on working on. It’s basically a recreation of the legend of zelda engine, specifically for ocarina of time. I don’t really plan on using it for anything other than a fun exercise, though.
I want to get as close as possible to recreating the feel of ocarina of time, so I want to use some sounds from the game. I don’t know if roblox is all right with me uploading sounds ripped straight from a nintendo game, however.
Link’s voice was most likely commissioned by nintendo, so they most likely have the right to the sound effects. Now I can deal with not having the iconic link grunts, in fact I can do without. But for everything else, it just doesn’t feel right without the trademark n64 sounds.
Some of the sounds also come from audio libraries, however I am completely unsure if roblox has purchased the right to any of these libraries.
For reference, the library that the cuckoo sound comes from currently costs 500$ (on a discount as of writing).
However I cannot find which library some of these sounds belong to (if any), and many sounds have been edited beyond recognition by Nintendo. Not to mention there will be a distinct lack of nostalgic n64 compression on the audio files.
Can I get in trouble for uploading sounds ripped straight from nintendo games? If so, any alternatives?
Thanks for the answer, but perhaps I wasn’t explaining very well;
I was looking specifically for alternatives which would carry the same feel as Ocarina of Time, whether that be a recommendation of a specific royalty free sound library that sounds similar to this game, or a specific compression method to achieve the same audio fidelity as sfx that would be found on n64 cartridges. These alternatives you’ve provided are very surface level and handwavy. Obviously providing your own audio files would be implied in the process of making sfx that don’t break copyright, but that doesn’t actually address the following:
and is perhaps missing the point.
If anyone knows how to achieve it, please let me know!
If you remember “Pokemon Brickbronze” that was a copy of Nintendo’s game. When Nintendo found out, ROBLOX had to delete the game for copyright to prevent sue. Meaning anything that came from Nintendo that is put onto ROBLOX is illegal and not allowed.
I have already decided not to upload nintendo sounds from the game. I was concerned that, since a large chunk of sounds Nintendo used came from other sound libraries not owned by Nintendo, that it would be kind of irrelevant (depending on whether or not Roblox has purchased the right to these sound libraries).
Oh and while it is Zelda themed, this is purely an exercise to see if it is doable. If it is ever to actually get published as a real game, it would get a fresh coat of paint i.e Robot64 compared to Super Mario 64.
I am not going to publish a Zelda game, do not worry. I’ve said countless times that this is purely an exercise trying to emulate the gameplay feel of Ocarina of Time. It is not even going to be infringing on any intellectual property as it sits on my hard drive, most likely never going to be in a good enough state to publish regardless.
I appreciate the concern, but I’m not about to shoot myself so blatantly in the foot like this, haha
