Can you use references when creating UGCs?

I recently created this:

But was criticized for using a reference:

It was unclear whether references were allowed and since I’m trying to get into the program, I need to know the rules.
I made the model from scratch and just followed the reference as a guide. I even purposely made some differences between the two. At the time I had assumed it was ok but now I’m not to sure. If you could help me out, that would be great! Thx!

I think you’ll be allowed to use them to get in but not if you do. If you do get in, its up to your imagination to think of original ideas.

You should be fine as long as enough is changed to be classed as inspiration, for example in your model the wings don’t hold as much detail around the dark parts, however some things such as a change in colour could help your chances between copying and inspiration.

makes sense. Do you think my model is different enough to be considered “inspiration” or is it too close?

You’ve changed a fair amount but you may want to get the artist’s word on this if possible.

You mean the original artist right?

Correct, they’ve got their watermark on the art so I’m sure you’d be able to find them.

tbh I’d rather not. Do you think I could just change the model more?

That would work, as long as its not a complete replica you should be fine.

where do I draw the line? I mean it’s already not…

When you’re trying to enter the program, I’m sure you’re able to use references for your portfolio projects, but when actually creating UGC, you should be using creativity.
