Can't select parts

Recently my studio just started getting stingy about what I can and cannot select inside the workspace. It mainly affects my main building place however I also recall it happened on my cinematic game. It affected my school computer and my home computer.

A video of the bug/problem terrorizing my braincells (Parts of the video where I seem to remain still is me trying to click on part/model)

Well, assuming that the only thing that moves over to different devices are the plugins, verify if any of them might be the cause.

Regarding the video, I really can’t tell really the issue since the mouse is not visible on it.

This is an issue that has plagued my workflow for a while now. Without fail, while working on any of the experiences that I do a selection will become persistent, locking out the ability to select anything else from within the viewport.

The closest I’ve been able to get to narrowing down the cause is that it tends to happen with duplicated items and/or parts/meshes that are grouped into a model. It’s not consistent enough though to rule out any other cause.

I’ve seen a fix of sorts to log out of studio and then log back in, as well as to quit and re-launch but it only works in short term.

Is there any insight from a dev/code standpoint as to what causes a selection to become persistent in general?

Whoops, forgot to turn that off. Heres one with the mouse.

I’ve had the same sort of issue appear on a private game i’ve been working on with some friends and it’s sort of spread to the point i practically cant select anything in game anymore. The affected parts i can drag to select or go via the explorer, but i cant click to select using any of the tools, which would make the already slow progress crawl to a halt, and also concerns me this might end up spreading over to some of my other projects

initially it started from this sort of square on the map that i added in a few days ago (November 3rd) and then i didnt touch the game at all untill yesterday when i wanted to work on the game more. I dont know if i introduced a sort of “disease” to the parts or not (best way i can describe it), because some of the stuff i added in was pasted in from an older game that had it’s own unrelated issues, such as some of the train models and the roundhouse building, and this issue did not occur beforehand, but i also do not know if it was perhaps a studio update in the meantime that caused whatever makes this bug appear.

I’ve tried the following :

  • republishing the game under a new slot
  • saving the game as a local file [where it also has the same issue]
  • regrouping the models affected [which has instead spread the issue to the rest of the game]
  • removing all my plugins [no changes to selection, it also only affects this place]
  • reverting the place back to older versions [only undoes some of the selection bugs that started in that session of studio]
  • Locking and unlocking parts
  • setting parts collision groups to Default [displayed as Default before and after and did not change selection ability]

and none of the above worked at solving the issue, i still couldnt select any of those parts from what i built in that one session, and it infact ended up spreading to more previously unaffected models.

As you can (hopefully) see in the video, some bits are able to be selected just fine, but others act like they dont exist at all or are locked (which they are not) in the same manner to the examples already on this post)
[when my mouse is hovering over stuff i am basically spam clicking, and i’ve also been reverting place versions before/after this video was recorded so at least some of the models clickable here werent clickable before or aren’t now ]

I’ve seen some posts in other places that suggested restarting your pc, logging out, reloading studio and then logging in, but after doing that i ungrouped a model containing a railway track piece elsewhere in the game, and then all of a sudden i could no longer select any of the track pieces at all across the entire map, after which i reverted the game to a version from yesterday when the issue was first encountered, but now it’s also now spread to certain random stations and other buildings, scenery and trains to the point i dont think i can actually continue building the game anymore unless i went and copy pasted the whole map into another place file, since that seems to be the only way i can regain the ability to click select stuff at least 8 times out of 10, however this would also mean having to port it over in chunks, reassemble it, drag over all the related scripts and then go and get all the audio files for stuff re-permited for the new slot and be quite a nightmare to solve all to risk it happening again the next time i publish.

due to the nature of the game containing a lot of models made by me and my friends that i dont want to end up circulating in public, i cant attach a place file directly onto this post, however if any staff or something would want a place file / logs and whatnot then i am willing to provide that in private.

also apologies if this is the wrong place to add onto or not, i don’t post to the devforum much, i’ve just not yet seen a post that specified the exact same issue i’m having now so thought it might be worth mentioning me having the issue to show that it’s happening to at least a few people (and sorry for the bad wording)

If it is completely fine to ask, what is the size of your place file in megabytes? Maybe studio starts croaking on large files?

Could perhaps be the case, downloading the latest version of the affected game shows a filesize of just under 15mb, and the game that some bits were pasted from into this one was 53mb, so perhaps something with the file sizes could be causing issues (it certainly has on a few games i’ve worked on in past years)

EDIT = i went and deleted all the trains from the save file i had, and that made the file size go from 15mb to 7, and it actually let me select stuff again. i tried limiting deletions to just the depot i recently added, which reduced it to 12.4, and that didnt work, but once i deleted a second depot worth of trains and sent it down to 8mb, it began working again, so i have to wonder if the problem in my game is either one of the trains elsewhere are setting something off (there are a lot of union-based ones ingame that are up to 3/4 year old models and theres been quite a few issues with unions in recent times), or it’s studio’s having a coughing fit with files over 10mb in size or something, might be something i can try narrowing down when i have more time

i have a kind of similar issue as you two have
but its where I can select parts but once i resize them or duplicate the part, it becomes unselectable
despite it being unselectable, i can still select it with box select
i’ve been searching the dev forum finding not much for me to fix my problem
its a shot in the dark, but i think i may or may not have found a solution for you

i know its a pretty rough fix but i really hoped that this can help anyone
maybe just disable it on some parts to make the build and then re-enable it later
if not, maybe someone can use this information to fix this annoying problem

Something that worked for me is this:

In the collision groups editor, there is studioselectable. If default cannot is not checked as can collide with this, it cant select item
