Can't upload .mp4!

As the title says, I can’t upload .mp4, it keeps giving me this error:

And I keep waiting forever for it to get to 100% when this annoying thing pops up!

Are you trying to upload an audio? If so, you need to upload an MP3 or OGG file.

It’s a screen recording, but I had my microphone off. Why?

This is not for video frames, it is for forum videos. I’m asking about uploading on the forum, or this would not be in forum bugs.

what are you using to record the video

Windows + Alt + R, the default recording mechanism.

what? xbox gamebar? im guessing you already tried refreshing right, and what browser are you using

Google Chrome, and I’ve tried refreshing.

could be on roblox’s end

is it your first time you tried uploading an mp4 file to here

Yes, I usually use .wmv, but .mp4 can be a thumbnail rather than download, or so I’ve heard.

.wmv usually works for me.

Yeah sorry, I did not pay close enough attention. This may be a problem on the DevForum/Discourse’s end. Do other video formats work for you?

try using a different recorder, obs specifically cause that’s the only good one i know, or you can upload it to YouTube and link it

or try again later

I’ve gotten that message before uploading an MP4, I think it was my Internet being spotty. It’s been a while though. Another issue I usually face is the file size being bigger than 10MB, but that’s not this issue I think. There’s a specific pop-up message for that.

Your message pop-up / warning is vague, no duh I guess. Maybe there’s a built-in response to reject uploads that take too long :person_shrugging:.

If it really a issue with how the video is encoded, then your best bet is to use a tool like FFmpeg to re-encode the video, after that, try to upload it again.

Also, it might be helpful to open up your browser’s developer tools (By using the key combo: Ctrl + Shift + I) and check the request response:

There’s not a lot of information to go off here, can you provide a specific repro file (upload it to some other file sharing site and share here so we can attempt it ourselves), or provide more info on what the request failure looks like as mentioned in browser network console?

If you’re worried about any sensitive data in the latter, feel free to send me a DM with more info.

The video I’ve tried is 12 seconds long and 13.9 MB

I don’t know any file sharing sites to use.

The maximum file size we allow on the forum currently is 10MB, so that would be why.

13.9MB is quite a lot of space for a 12 second video, I recommend running that through a compression algorithm or reducing the resolution.

If you use ShareX, there is a built in video compression tool hidden inside the “Video Converter” tool.

I use Microsoft Clipchamp for compressing.
