Can't Upload Videos On Developer Forum

Every time I try to upload a video on here it doesn’t work. It gets to a certain point, say 35%, and just stays there, eventually just cancelling the upload. I’ve checked and the video file type shouldn’t be the problem as it’s mp4. I’ve tried restarting my computer and it didn’t work.

I’m not sure how to go about fixing this and would really appreciate suggestions on how to fix this problem or if it is out of my control.

Typically this happens if the file size is too large. You could try Gfycat for uploading large MP4s if you don’t need audio.

You could also upload them to Google Drive, Dropbox, Or OneDrive. The just get a link and share.

I would recommend using gfycat or similar anyway, so the files stay around for a longer amount of time. If they are hosted in a user directory then it is dependent on the user keeping it around, and if they don’t then the topic may have broken content in it eventually.

Ideally you would make the file small enough so that it can just be uploaded on the forum, that’s the best way to make sure it sticks around.

Would a 15-second video be too large?

Video file sizes are very sporadic and difficult to estimate, it depends on a lot of different factors, resolution, how much change is going on in the frame, compression used. Here is a really good video that explains it better than I can.

Please don’t use cloud storage services like that for long-term file hosting for the forum. Inevitably you will delete these files from your drive and break your threads. Other services such as Imgur (for images), Gfycat, or YouTube are far better options if you cannot get your files to upload on the forum.
