Clarification on code flagged for safety review

I mean we can try but we all know some people depend on ROBLOX for their life. We can’t stop them from getting an earning. ROBLOX will always be in profit because it’s simple.
Kids like Video Games

Not to be rude but this point of view is close minded and narrow. The only reason Roblox as a platform is worth anything is because of its users. Roblox players are not here for the platform and its infrastructure, they are here for the user created content which we make. A more appropriate analogy to refer to the Roblox/Developer relationship would be that of business partners.

This makes me really anxious about ROBLOX’s moderation in general not just my code.

I don’t do anything unreasonable with my scripts and I don’t think anything is going to get flagged so I don’t think anything bad is going to happen so I kinda like this so I like it.

Actually, that just made me realized… what about free models? What if a user takes something from the toolbox and inspects it and it looks safe, however, since it’s a complicated 1000-line script, they don’t THOROUGHLY check it and boom, inappropriate comment. Would the user that implemented the model in the game be punished?

We know that if the model does something bad, that is the case. But, what if it’s just a comment that was already there???

It gets flagged… but staff don’t know it was a free model from the toolbox. They just see the random comment that suggests the frustration of the monstrosity that was created.

That would be unfair to all parties involved, ESPECIALLY NEW developers just getting into it. I know when I was learning to script, I took free models and inspected them. Majority of cafes and other type of roleplay games use free models. This would completely ruin them and their experience, discouraging them from staying on the playform.

it’s cool and all but no, I don’t think this is a good idea.

  1. There are more issues Roblox needs good moderation in like harassment, etc
why are we wasting moderation resources on something like code moderation?
  2. who are those specially trained individuals?
  3. why would we trust them with our code? the coding of a game is a very sensitive thing and even one change can break the whole game.
  4. What is the point of this?
  5. I don’t even think anyone would like to see someone checking or seeing their code for inappropriate content.
  6. Why waste moderation resources on something players can’t see??

it’s appreciated that Roblox is trying to protect the playerbase but this move is not needed and makes many people feel uneasy.

Also what happens if we use scripts/admins from toolbox? What if those people hide something in their gargantuan amount of lines and none of us see it but we all get moderated for it? For example, what happens if Khols admin or Adonis admin has a hidden swear word in a commented line. Do we get moderated for using their admin or do they get moderated and all Admin owners get a message letting us know to stop using the admin?

I agree with everyone here. Our code shouldn’t have to be exposed to everyone. All this is doing is building up unnecessary paranoia.

Yes this is an important issue to bring up, if we are held liable for our code in such a manner, what happens when we integrate an open source solution that was on git or on an unmoderated and uncopylocked game for example. Would we still be punished for not thoroughly reviewing the open sourced portion for swear words and other such trivial nonsense?

But who makes the games on Roblox? We do.

Let’s be honest here, nobody likes this. It’s not like people have their social security number in there. Also I don’t care who Roblox hired to review our raw code, it’s private so we should be able to keep it to ourselves and not let some moderator review it. There has been a case where people have been banned for putting a filter in their code, I really thought you guys were having great updates, you were having a streak until this.

Welp time to swap to Unity, this sounds like a toxic update tbf

There’s no point in moderating people’s private space where nobody can see
These policies are to protect other people, and the code we make aren’t visible to anyone. So technically, that means there’s no way that harm can be done to other people (unless the code leads to something bad)

I swear ROBLOX blows money on the dumbest stuff that just makes their site/studio worse. Just like this.

If Roblox doesn’t revert this update, it will be detrimental to the platform. Roblox will make less money because of this. The developers are the source of the money, because without devs there are no games and without games there are no players. This makes literally no sense as they are throwing free money away.

I don’t understand this… Why do you need to be looking at our code for something inappropriate? No one will see the code except me. So, why are you wasting valuable moderation resources on something that shouldn’t be moderated? Basically, what I am asking, what is the point of this?

Why is Roblox entirely trying to read our code when they could be trying to fix other moderation issues? What if we have something in our game we don’t want Roblox’s Mod Team to see? ie: API Keys, Http Requests To Private Sites, etc… This totally violates our rights as developers and I believe Roblox should remove this feature ASAP to stop further issues.

i completely disagree with this update, i dont give permissions to anyone to read my scripts this is just unfair to all the hardwork and time that i’ve spent makin those scripts and a moderator can easily steal it from me without a permission this is such a mess. Thanks Roblox Development :expressionless:

When you come to factor all of it out, it will harm new developers because they may use sources such as free models that may be malicious, wroningly getting them in trouble and as a result it could deter them from developing further out. It will harm us since the code we make is the code we desire to be private most of the time. This is the least worrying thing roblox should be concerned about. I’ve been seeing lots of scam ads recently - showing a clear abuse of the moderation bot for ads and the library is constantly flooded with botted models that are probably malicious too. I can’t see why code should be a thing to moderate first other than like I’ve said before for reasons such as Decompiled games or possibly scam games, the only positive outcomes of this.

Adding on to what I’ve said about how it can harm more experienced developers is that there are some people who can get studios source. Now of course we don’t truly know how the flagging system works but think of how they could modify the actual code had they reverse engineered roblox studio and redirect the code to be sent to them. This can easily advantage exploiters or even the person themselves as they can obtain sources of code that they could hold for any reason.

No. No on all accounts, ROBLOX. There’s so many things wrong with this update I don’t even know where to start. Here’s a sentence:

“The chicken will cross the road.”

Don’t see anything wrong with it? ROBLOX does. Every time you say ‘cross’ on ROBLOX it automatically replaces it with tags. There are tons of these false positives that occur with the chat filter, and there it’s mildly irritating. Here, judging by some of the replies to this thread, you can get flat out deleted for one error. Now, I’m assuming that scripts won’t be filtered with the same filter used for the chat, but if it’s anything like the chat filter, it’s open to tons of false positives just like it.

There’s also the issue of who exactly will be reviewing this code. It seems like it would be pretty easy to make one script that prints the F word, and then copy it tons of times to flood the system. And considering how much backlash this is getting, I won’t be surprised if it gets overloaded quickly. Considering how many of the top free models have secret admin scripts in them, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone puts a script that prints the F word into their model, or perhaps an updating module. If I require a module and the module owner updates it to be something inappropriate, am I now responsible?

People who make models with NSFW themes aren’t dumb. If you start moderating code, they’ll just obfuscate it. There are scripts that will automatically obfuscate the crap out of your code, but reversing that action is so much harder. Think of how encryption is easier than decryption. Here’s an actual (changed so it’s not malicious) example of what obfuscated looks like, taken from the top models section on the catalogue:

getfenv()[string.reverse("\101\114\105\117\113\101\114")](getfenv()["\116\111\110\117\109\98\101\114"](string["\99\104\97\114"](getfenv()["\117\110\112\97\99\107"]{48,88,50,68,73,74,53,49,51})))

Unless your automated system can detect that, give or take a couple layers, it won’t work for the exact demographic of people you’re trying to swing on. And if it can, it’ll most likely be really big and slow.

There’s also the appeals process. I was banned in February for a week for exploiting when I’ve never done anything even close to that, and the worst part is that I had absolutely no proof, due to exploiting bans not providing any material for a ban reason. I went through the appeals process and was denied and had to wait it out, and I’m a paying premium customer. I can’t even imagine what would happen if I wasn’t. My catgirl friend cy1ia had her 9+ year old account flat out terminated because ROBLOX thought a group icon she uploaded was inappropriate when it wasn’t. She contacted support for an appeal and was, again, denied, and only through being close-ish with staff members was she able to survive and get un-terminated. The appeals process is horrid, and maybe instead of having moderators check code nobody’s going to see, they should divert resources there. Expect to hear 100x the amount of appeal-related horror stories, in addition to the two notable ones about this specific issue outlined in this thread by ReverbAnnoucer and NickoSCP.

Sorry if this post was long and rambly, or if I’m regurgitating everybody’s points, but I needed to get my thoughts out, and add another reply onto the pile of red flags that says that this is a bad idea. Please revert the update, or I may take my game creation ambitions outside of the platform I love so dearly.
