[Client Beta] In-experience Mesh & Image APIs now available in published experiences

free-form user creation is basically allowing the user to change an image or mesh in any way they want, however they want

so no, using predefined textures and sliders to edit an image is not considered free-form user creation (unless the user themselves can upload textures)

This is incredibly awesome, however my joy for it was sapped away due to the ID-verification requirement. Please reconsider, as I would like to use this API without sacrificing my privacy.

I’ve been around for many new feature releases, which seemingly always come with caveats that discard certain use cases, but I’ve never seen a feature release as such an utter and complete disappointment as this. I’m not going to verify my ID just to draw triangles on screen. Great job roblox.

It’s great that this feature can now be used in games, but I don’t understand why the 13+ restriction applies to plugins as well. I was working on a plugin yesterday that relied on EditableImages but now it’s broken due to this :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

The 13+ ID verification requirement is also insane. This isn’t gonna prevent people from bypassing nsfw or offensive assets onto this platform, unless there’s a deeper meaning behind this restriction.

I don’t often reply to things like these, but seriously? id-verification for an API i previously had access to? Also id-verification locked games which have freeform drawing/editing/building? Does that include games like bloxburg?.. Its technically a drawing game afterall. Why would anyone go through the effort of using these API’s to break guidelines, when you already can and easily by placing a few parts in a certain order, moderation should be done on a per game basis, restrictions like these shouldn’t be placed on the API itself.

I was happy until I read THIS.
WHAT in the hell is owner of this decision?
I understand that this will help in combating bad actors, but there’s HELL TON OF PEOPLE who just WONT trust Roblox their Real-life data. I’m one of them. Update itself W until this massive over-L

I think a lot of people will vote that this restriction is unneeded and needs to be removed. Improve moderation instead of making such restrictions.

Should ID verification requirement be removed from this?
  • Yes, I’m ID verified and think so.
  • Yes, I’m not ID verified and think so.
  • No, I’m ID verified and think so.
  • No, I’m not ID verified and think so.

EDIT:

If you guys think that such “protections” will work, then you are forgetting capablities of Roblox engine and developers. Let’s take some examples where people did really hard things without this features:

  1. Basically same EditableImage but worse performance. What stops people from using it in a inapopriate way? Like drawing p*** images? (You understood).
  1. Skinned mesh ocean. Now let’s imagine scenario where bad actor publish just sphere with every vertex having a bone. Then in game he moves them to form inapopriate thing. You got bad use of EditableMesh without itself.
  1. Mesh slicing. Because meshes are made out of triangles, we can make ANY form we want. And we can generate inapopriate things even out of wedges. FURTHERMORE, we can even CHANGE THEIR COLORS to make inapopriate things even inapopriaterer!!!

I hope staff will read this and understand, that all this security measurements are just

Useless, and only thing you are doing is restricting good features from people, and ruining people's games. Bad actors will always find a way to bypass any restirctions, or just use diffirent technique.

Why does the group owner need to be ID verified? I work on games for a group where it’s owner isn’t a developer and also isn’t ID verified and probably won’t be any time soon. I get secrets being locked to the group owner but image and mesh APIs? I don’t really like that.

Weird scenario of using my thread but all good, I have actually been waiting for the release of editable mesh for my oceans for a while now, the only reason I refrained is due to it not being released. Now that it’s some what released I came to the conclusion with votes and polls and questions from my discord server, that editable mesh’s are WAY faster than skinned mesh’s. I was dissapointed when I saw the ID-Verification, I’am 14 but don’t feel comfortable showing my face, and I didn’t have a reason for any 13+ features. Until now…

Tbh I just found some posts which I have readen in the past. My main intent was showing the point that everything can be used for bad things, and restricting features to ID verification is useless. Only valid reason I see if Roblox benefits from getting our IDs, but not says that to public.

Yeah, I understand all good, Just wanted to point out the fact of me being in a simmiliar situation.

There’s alot to say here:

Shouldn’t the experience be age-restricted for free-form use of editable images/meshes rather than the API + ID verification?

Even tho I’m verified, I’ve never seen a case where you have to verify your ID to use a ROBLOX STUDIO feature / API.

Also I don’t think that your little timmy only need editable meshes/images to do the worst, like OTHER free models, for exemple.

This really needs filtering/resampling options like NearestNeighbor algorithm which allows for low resolution pixelated textures to look sharp. But I am excited for the future of EditableMeshes!

In case you or anybody reading this thread doesn’t know, ImageLabels/ImageButtons expose a ResampleMode property that allows you to select whether it uses Nearest Neighbor or Bilinear filtering.

bro i’m sorry but an 8 year old isn’t the one with malicious intents of generating inappropriate content to other children, it’s the weirdos out there.

id-verification does somewhat help against this, but not in this way. issue isn’t age but more so repeat offenders… but it is very unfortunate for many devs out there without id-verification.

honestly the issue is probably more prevalent with players rather than devs anyways.

reconsider this feature roblox, pretty pls with a cherry on top

Is PhotoBooth(?) a plugin ? or part of this Roblox API ?
Looks quite interesting.

this plugin looks amazing good job !

go to game settings :- security and turn on editable image and editable mesh APIs

i see this as a good thing to lock this for id verified users only , if this was opened to every one this will cause a huge chaos !

… As if you couldn’t do it already with more primitive ways.

To think about it, there really is no reason gatekeeping it like that, they’re just trying to stop whats already possible.

If Roblox’s trust and safety wants to stop bad actors, they would probably just gatekeep entire game development behind id requirement.

yeah they should fix their moderation instead of locking every thing , but as players and creators we show them many bad things that other creators made and players used in a bad way so this my be the reason ?
