Unsure if he’d be too busy to do it, but I know @Spooks_HD is an incredible coder. If I re-call he did some web server stuff for the Bloxy’s this past year to save purchases & what not.
I’ve thought a lot about this post as I don’t usually like to stir drama but I genuinely care for this community and the younger developers in it - who are often taken advantange of by being sucked into unfair contracts/promised things that can’t be delivered,
I would exercise extreme caution when dealing with Vurse. I had a lot of communication directly with Vurse about this job offer and here is my take away.
-
He tried to make me sign an “NDA” which was actually a contractor agreement, what was weird about this - when I explained that this wasn’t an NDA and that I could use an NDA I’ve used in the past he wasn’t willing to sign just an NDA to discuss finer game details and wanted to discuss payment terms first.
-
The payment terms are very open-sided, and Vurse is not willing to work with a VERY standard milestone payment system which is often used for projects this size. My guess is that he doesn’t plan on paying the $80k on completion/or the game doesn’t do well he will say the project wasn’t completed and such isn’t required to pay the contractor.
-
Vurse is not willing to put into the contract the 50% profit clause, because (I can’t find the exact quote) but he said something along the line is it would be impossible to specify what 50% of profit is.
I’m not sure if Vurse is genuinely naive to how these contracts should usually be laid out, perhaps he is trying to make an awesome Roblox game and pay some serious money. None the less, I’d work on the bias of how the contract is specifically designed in a way to give Vurse all the power, and absolutely no protection to YOU the contractor (who’s doing all the work). Contracts are supposed to be that both parties are protected if one side decides to not follow through with their word, not protect one side of the party so heavily.
My recommendation is that if he can not work with milestone payments, I would advise against working on this project.
None the less,
Best of luck to the project and hopefully these problems can be ironed out and we see another amazing game on Roblox
Thanks for not stirring any drama. Three things. Your first bullet point, it was very clear between both of us while we spoke that the ‘NDA’ was not just an NDA, especially considering you said you were ready to sign it all before I told you I didn’t want to do milestones. And yes, beforehand you asked me to use a free internet NDA and I said no. Second point, yes, the contract is to protect me, not the contractor. Your opinions should be heard, though it seems like a bit of a random attack to say I’m likely going to scam the scripter, from our talks everything seemed good willed and you understood I simply did not want to do milestone payments, as that’s not part of the agreement. Third bullet point, I did not say any of this at all, thanks for making it up. I did say that it is difficult to put into a contract what the “completion” of a project is, as that term is very vague and hard to define. From all our chats you didn’t voice such strong opinions, you seemed accepting and understanding of my point of view regarding milestone payments. Nonetheless, you’re entitled to vent, thanks for the feedback and I welcome more of it. Just please try to stick to facts when you make powerful posts like this.
Nowhere near as big as this undertaking, but I concur with AlgyLacey. I had a nice experience working with Vurse.
I don’t see this being acceptable given the terms you’ve laid out (50% profit). You simply cannot use a one-sided contractor agreement when what you’ve described is essentially a partnership.
I would caution anyone from taking this job unless the same terms of the original post are laid out in the agreement. Contracts are legally binding, Developer Forum posts are not. Anything that is not stated in the agreement may as well have never been said.
Heyo. I’ve never disagreed with the idea of a contract to specify that I will pay 50% and 84k, that’s just made up. I’m completely fine with that Don’t know why trolls are coming here and saying I’m not. The way that is written up is something the scripter can request and discuss if they want it. I’ve never been requested to come up with something like that through the last 4 years that I’ve paid coders and builders between 5k - 20k USD, but I can. It just hasn’t been a practice, as no one I’ve wound up working with has wanted something like that. The NDA and injury non liability that I’m having people sign though has nothing to do with a partnership, or their payment or anything else we are talking about at the moment. It is simply that, an NDA and non liability for injuries that I’d like people to sign. I agree with what you’re saying Berezaa, if a contractor wants legal protection regarding payment, a devforum post will not provide it, contracts are great for that.
It’s good for all developers to be aware of potential problems related to what we’re talking about.
Hey all,
While a project such as this seems very intriguing, Please be very careful as to what you put yourself into. While the pay is excellent, don’t let it blind you from what you may end up being asked to work on, as it can be out of your “skill scope”.
I’ve known Vurse to be very professional and generally a kind person, with his past success he definitely knows how games work on Roblox, so a partnership with him would be a great experience. However I’d urge both parties (Vurse and Contractor) to look for assistance from a professional who can handle creating the right contract to protect both parties should.
I was personally interested in this however, at the time of my application to this project, I also applied to another job to see what catches first. Unfortunately it wasn’t this Job that I ended up going with, but I’d still be willing to work on it if I was not already on board for something else.
Good luck to everyone, hope to see something great come out of this!
My question is why are you spending over 100,000 USD on a game that you don’t mind if it flops? 100,000 USD is an insane amount for a Roblox game.
Good question. Firstly, I do mind if it flops, but a game flopping shouldn’t alter the owner’s professional procedures and standards. Especially if they are part of an agreement. My confidence in the game plan outweighs any fear of failure on my end. But all in all, I can’t deny, it’s still a gamble. As is any game on Roblox or otherwise, it has the potential to fail on release (while it may not be likely / or not what I believe will happen), I’m prepared to pay the completion payment regardless of success. Whether the game succeeds or doesn’t is something that rests on my shoulders. If it doesn’t succeed on release, it’ll be due to my failure in planning and supervising it, and I’m ready to pay the prices for a mistake like that. On a different note to everyone who is still keeping up with this thread, I may have likely found the needed coder/coders, though the positions will still technically remain open until the 24th for potential late inquirers.
