Competitions for in game currency banned?

Hey there everyone, I was browsing roblox community standards and found that under Illegal and Regulated Goods and Activities there was this phrase:

“On-platform contests, games of chance, or competitions where Robux or anything else of value is offered as a prize”

Now this ‘of value’ is interesting to me - does this not technically mean that in game currency cannot be given as a reward for a competition among players - e.g. tournament style competition between players - winning player gets in game currency as a reward

I find this extremely worrying as competitions are a way to encourage fun in-game and was just looking for some advice as I can’t find anyone talking about this!

ingame currency is ok, it doesnt have value outside your game

Do you know what they mean by ‘of value’ though…? I don’t see it really specified anywhere as to what ‘of value’ means

by value they mean something that is related to real money, ingame currencies dont count because they dont have any real value anywhere outside that specific game

I don’t think this is directly true though as further down it says:

“No real money, Robux, or in-experience items of value may be exchanged in connection with any gambling activities.”

Are you taking this to mean currency bought with robux…?

It’s basically a bet.
You and another player put up in-game money (a bet) for whoever wins.
Young kids may not understand that a good player could play a few cheap rounds and lose horribly, then say “How about the next one we both do a very high number of currency?”
Kid loses in game money, parents find out it’s gambling, and sue Roblox.

Can you guess why Roblox wouldn’t allow it?

What about when the person who loses doesn’t lose anything? The person who started the competition (likely the owner) would give the prize to the winner, and the loser wouldn’t lose anything (I apologize if I worded it wrong)

Ah, ok.
If you play a game and win in game money with no risk then that isn’t going against the TOS.

But the whole thing surrounding this is that it’s a competition and that roblox says anything “of value” without describing what “of value” is.

This is incredibly up to interpretation which I don’t doubt is on purpose so that they can pick and choose what to prosecute…

By what Scottifly is saying (which again - is up to interpretation) even if it is in-game currency and not buyable via ROBUX it could still breach this

I’d argue that the common sense interpretation of the rules is the following:

  1. It should not cost a currency that could be purchased using robux to enter
  2. The rewards for winning can be any of the in game currencies
  3. The reward currency cannot be exchanged for robux / real currency of value

Realistically you aren’t going to get banned for hosting tournament or competition of any sort within your game. Many communities do tournaments in their discords with in game rewards such as The Conquerors 3, Tower Battles, and many more I’m not aware of for sure.

The reason the language is vague is so that they can drop the hammer when they feel necessary and not face a chance at legal repercussions, but realistically they wont ban you unless you’re letting people pay robux to gamble in your roblox casino.
