Note that I am not the best with networking, forgive me if I’m missing some relevant information, just request it and I’ll see if I can provide it.
Description and general information
I can’t tell if this is Roblox interacting weird with my ISP, or if it’s the other way around, but regardless I’m submitting this as a bug report as either way I believe it still counts as a bug.
I haven’t been keeping track of when this began happening, but I vaguely remember it starting sometime in late 2021 to early 2022. I have had ping spikes which happen in every game at inconsistent intervals, and it seems to subside when using internet which is not my own. This occurs exclusively on Roblox, and I have not observed it occurring in any other multiplayer games.
Relevant specifics
Motherboard: Gigabyte B760 Gaming X AX, using the WiFi antenna which comes with it
Internet adapter: Realtek 8852CE WiFi PCI-E NIC
What I know likely isn’t causing the issue
I know it isn’t a problem with throttling as my ISP doesn’t throttle, and VPNs don’t seem to solve the issue either.
I know it isn’t my computer, as I had this problem with my previous office computer.
I know it isn’t my connection as my connection speed (~400 Megabits per second) doesn’t waver when ping spikes occur.
What I have tried
I have tried using 2.5G, did not solve the issue.
I have tried using 5G, did not solve the issue.
I have tried using 6GHz band, did not solve the issue.
I have tried using a VPN, did not solve the issue.
I have tried ethernet cable, did not solve the issue.
I have tried USB internet connectors, did not solve the issue.
I have tried flushing my DNS, did not solve the issue.
I have tried setting a default DNS, (useless change) did not solve the issue.
I have tried resetting WinSock, did not solve the issue.
I have tried disabling QOS on both my WiFi and my computer’s internet adapter, did not solve the issue.
I have tried disabling full-screen optimizations, did not solve the issue.
I have tried many other things not listed here which I did not keep track of that, of course, did not solve the issue. (Please do suggest fixes if you have them, this isn’t meant to shut down any ideas you may have, just to let you know I may have previously tried it)
Examples of the issue
I have tested this on three different games with varying variety in server size, and detail.
In every game I tested I observed the issue occurring.
Test game one
QS Energy Research Facility
More than eleven players including me, did not get exact player count, most likely ~24
Extremely detailed, >70000 parts consistently
Spikes appear to be similar in prominence and length as Heroes Battlegrounds, if not slightly longer
Test game two
Heroes Battlegrounds
Ten players including me
Detailed, >17000 parts consistently
Spikes appear to be more prominent (usually every 15 or more seconds) and last longer (usually around 4-5 seconds)
Test game three
Default baseplate (Private game)
No players besides me
Barely any detail, 20 parts consistently
Spikes appear to be less prominent (usually every 60 or more seconds) and don’t last as long (usually around 1 second)
I’m not certain if this is correlated or if it’s just coincidence, but if you pay attention to the CPU usage near a spike, you’ll notice that the CPU usage drops to an unusually low percentage, and then raises back up to a more normal percentage.
Also, a 100 ping average in my own servers in an empty game is absurd.
I would expect something more like 20 ping.
Expected behavior
I expect to be able to play Roblox smoothly without spiking 24/7.
