Hey builders, I’m looking for any advice I can use to make this portion of a build of mine look better. It is of a collapsing wooden floor. As you can see, it’s in a painfully perfect circle shape which isn’t sitting right with me. The issue isn’t so much the shape of it that’s an issue but rather the silhouette of it being very noticeable. What are some techniques or ideas I can utilise to make this look better?
i think you mean uh… deconstructive criticism collapsing floor joke
Looks fine, not the best though.
I recommend seeing how an actual wooden floor collapses. Something like so:
As you can see it’s not perfectly circular and has some chips. A wooden floor should also have layers as shown in the image. Adding concrete and such would enhance the look. Or just add some wooden framework if you want it all wood.
This is the worst joke of the century.
i really appreciate ur advice but i wanted to point out that the photo you provided is a render and not an actual floor collapse LOL
You could use blender… if you want a more realistic effect
someone i know already suggested that!! but this is a traditional part-based build so no meshes are to be used. i should’ve stated too that i’m not doing realistic architecture; the floor planks are 1x1 studs thick lol
It looks like you made a circle and rotated the parts inside it… You should scale some down, rotate some planks a little more, randomize the planks and the hole shape, maybe try and mess with some wood material here and there.
I’m looking to hide the silhouette of the shape. A circular impact is fine but you can see the hard outline of the shape. i would still have silhouette issues no matter the shape i make it in the floor
You could use props and decoration such as carpets and rubble but if you don’t want that you could use unions. Union the whole floor and see it the issue is fixed.
You cant hide the circle silhouette because thats how you made it. Maybe don’t make a big circle hole and fill it in.
I’d recommend retaining advice from both @HijackedSystem and @awry_y. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a perfectly circular collapse, in a wooden floor especially. Some randomisation in plank length, chips and cracks that could be accomplished with wedges if you wish to avoid creating such in Blender. The silhouette will be hard to hide as it’s an incredibly prominent outline of a perfectly round circle, some randomisation to its structure would help with this. It would also be cool to see extra detail within the actual collapse, like pieces of floor joists & insulant.
be constructive with ur criticism i dare you
I did, I said whats wrong with it. Sorry if it sounded rude…
i appreciate ur input the most so far! thank you very much for the tips and advice. i’m keeping what you and they said in mind
Are you sure the colours match? If it’s a Union that could be the issue. There’s a property named UsePartColor that you can check off.
Usually a plank floor failure would follow the lines of the supporting beams underneath it. I’d expect straighter lines along the bent edges and a more randomized ‘crack’ down the middle section.
WoodPlank probaby isn’t the best Material because it’s not that realistic for a supported wood structure. Boards IRL are cut so they sit directly on top of the beam at the end of the board.
If you want constructive criticism then you should also talk nicely to others, if you don’t then don’t expect any constructive criticism. Got it? Use your brain next time.
yeah this dude is right.
if you’re planning to make any type of destruction never make it look smooth (no circles…). it needs to be chipped and such.
something i made in like 10 minutes without the use of unions or meshes, purely part-based.
as you can see it’s very barebones and rushed, but it’s just to get a point across.
i mean simply create a floor, create holes and gaps, add some broken planks on the sides, etc.
but anyways best of luck
so funny i forgot tuah laugh.
thanks for ur suggestions and advice everyone!! i have found the solution. shoutout to @Reverse_Polarity for helping me realise what needs to be done. since this answer wasn’t suggested before, i wanted to briefly discuss it here
most of the answers suggested were often referencing to actual architecture, but all we’re doing is an oldschool style of build. the mistake i had initially made was making a smooth circle out of wedges, in which the angled down parts connecting to it couldn’t do so seamlessly. so i deleted all the edges and made a circular shape using only parts, shown below
from here, i placed and repositioned the parts used to fill in the hole. the center of the cave-in is the deepest point and the planks gradually rise much like a staircase until they even out on top.
it’s funny that even tho the solution was very simple, it took a lot of heads to think of! just goes to show that sometimes not even the most experienced of builders might know the best solution to a problem right away. thank you all who have respectfully submitted ur ideas and suggestions, there’s no shame in asking for help even if the solution might be elementary
Isn’t this important information that we needed?
perhaps in hindsight, i ain’t always the best at explaining things. but the solution’s been found so there you go
