I’ve actually been dealing with this bug for probably around 6 or 7 months now, but I never really bothered to report it because I almost never play games and studio works fine (for the most part, i’ll expand later).
The bug is pretty straightforward to explain, any time I try to click a play button on the site and Roblox tries to launch it immediately freezes and crashes. I should mention that from what I remember the client will update (when there are updates available) so it seems the crash happens after that part of the client startup.
I did also have some problems with studio for quite some time as well, but that seemed to have fixed itself around mid June. The problem I was having with studio was that some times when starting up the launcher would show on my screen for a split second disappear and then do nothing, however it would not freeze like the client does. The process would just end and nothing would happen. Again, studio would still update no problem if it needed to, the problem was always after. To work around this I had to navigate to the “…/AppData/Local/Roblox/Versions” to the folder with the studio.exe and run the one that would not startup with the launcher.
The bug happens every time for me without fail, but I don’t know how to reproduce it. As I mentioned earlier this started 6 or 7 months ago, although I cannot remember any exact dates so that’s a rough estimate.
I uninstalled the client and deleted the folder at “…/AppData/Local/Roblox” . I’ve tried to reinstall which in the past would run the update cycle and freeze after as described above, but today I can’t even seem to get the update cycle. As such I know don’t even have a folder in “…/AppData/Local/Roblox/Versions” that has the client.exe.
If I were to guess this is a problem with the launcher and my ideal test would be to try loading into a game and somehow avoiding the launcher, but even if that is possible I don’t currently have a way to get the client files on my computer without freezing.
Cleared your cache? Win+R %temp% and delete all the temporary files to do with ROBLOX.
Also, I don’t know if this is relevant but when you uninstall ROBLOX does it remove all the registry keys or should you attempt to do that yourself? Try not to destroy your computer whilst doing so though, lol.
Sorry if none of this works but just brainstorming I guess.
Okay, I checked the temp files and all that seemed to be there were logs. So I don’t think that’s the problem.
I went into regedit and started removing roblox related keys. I had some interesting results.
The first and potentially most important is that removing one of the keys allowed me to actually download the client files to my computer again so there’s that, yay!
The second was that when I deleted the “Current user > Software > microsoft > internet explorer > low rights > elevationpolicy” (rough path) I was actually able to load up a game! I thought I had fixed it and was about to post here, but I tested on an alt (bc two step verification takes long to log in and out) so I needed to test on my main account. When I tried again it no longer worked! I went back to the same alt and again it did not work!!
I’ve played around with different combinations of games/accounts/etc and tried removing the same registry keys, but was unable to get a game going again. I just can’t for the life of me find any sort of pattern or more specific source of problem.
Okay! So I finally found a way to launch a game every time! It’s probably the ugliest fix ever, but hopefully the information will help hone in on the problem.
When in a state of constant freezing/crashing first remove “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy” in regedit. If it’s empty skip this step (I only had to do it my first time).
Win+R %localappdata%, Roblox > Versions > RobloxStudioLauncherBeta.exe. This will update studio. Note: you have to run studio like this because it won’t run the launcher normally and update if you do otherwise, I believe this is linked to the regedit earlier.
Go to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy” in regedit and clear again.
You should now be able launch one game and if you want to do it again you have to repeat the steps.
Just updating this thread in case anyone stumbles upon it in the future. After doing all the registry stuff as described above if I set compatibility mode on the client launcher to windows 8 I can play again. I have to do this every time the client updates, but at least that’s not every day.
Hi EgoMoose, sure is a long time now since this happened to you but I happen to experience this exact same issue as you where every time I try to play any Roblox game. I get the error ‘An unexpected error occurred and Roblox needs to quit. We’re sorry!’
I started to experience this issue yesterday when I was fiddling around with the AnalyticsService in the command bar in studio and I was also setting up my game with Game Analytics. After all this, then this crashing started to happen.
Would be great to know if you can remember how you were able to rectify this issue (I am assuming you are not experiencing this issue anymore since this post is from 3 years ago). Any other participation would be immensely appreciated.
