Creating an RPG game?

Hey! I want to create an RPG game similar to Blox Fruits, but I want the player to do things other than farming islands, or “grinding”. I also want to make unique combat, not just spamming the left mouse button or using OP fruits/swords. How would overcome such a massive task? Any feedback would be nice, thanks!

Wouldn’t this go on #help-and-feedback:game-design-support?

Anyways. If you want to make a RPG game that doesn’t consist of grinding - first think about what a RPG is. Take games like Genshin Impact as inspiration. You can make side activities rather than just grinding all day for anything.

Plus, about combat, it all depends on how your game will be. With magic or not, aiming towards fantasy or real life, etcetera. Combat mechanics really differ between these two.

Non-grind games with actual story behind the missions would be more interesting and more enjoyable atleast for myself. Most people that play those grindy RPG games just want to be the Top 1 and keep their spot on the Top.

Yes, I’d agree.

I wanted to say exactly this… And RPG for me has always been to grind.

If you wanted to add more variation to combat, maybe you could think of a way for the player to learn and equip different fighting techniques. Each technique could consist of various key binds/button combinations.

Just keep in mind that if you make combat too difficult, players would likely lose interest.

I’ve mentioned this. Take Genshin Impact as an example. Probably the best RPG out there.

It has an amazing storyline, many things to do, and yet it does consist of grinding, it’s not the main side activity you can do.

RPG, as its name suggests, stands for Role-Playing Genre. You walk through story quests to improve your character stats, this being weapons or their self-stats. Of course, you don’t have to complete the game in one sitting, nor you have to max your character out from grinding.

Grinding is a side activity. It’s used to obtain certain attitudes or weapons that improve your character further than what story mode can achieve you. It is not necessarily important, nor it’s considered “useless” in any RPG game. But again, it’s not the most important thing.

Just, don’t make it pay to win like Genshin.

Oh, I know… But when I play an RPG, I always choose to grind and usually focus on levelling up a particular set of stats… I’m more of a ranged fighter.

Okay, I have a basis on how to keep the player entertained, without grinding, but what else could I do to keep the player in-game longer and make then enjoy the game? It is a One Piece game, for any context.

First tip: make an original game… Please…

Just make something original rather than using stuff like One Piece - Anime in general - for your games.

The ones based in Anime are not that original, if you create your own storyline with your own characters, you’ll see results.

Then if I may ask, what does Genshin Impact have that makes Grinding not the main feature but the side feature? (Other then having a storyline).

Because you get items as you advance through the story.

Simple explanation, but of course, the items are not enough for all your characters. That’s why grinding is an option, rather than a must, to complete the game.
