Creating games with massive player counts

The other day I thought up a pretty neat idea for a game. I won’t get too in-depth with it but the fundamental concept is this: 100v100 player team battles with weapons ranging from medieval swords to modern firearms. Obviously one big question is to be immediately asked: would it even be possible to host that many players in a single lobby and expect even bearable server performance? My real question is, has anyone tried to do something like this before? Was it to this magnitude, and was it successful? Assuming higher levels of ping (around ~200 on an acceptable connection) will suffice for the game’s mechanics, and that the maps and vfx aren’t too fancy, and the code is optimized alright, could the game servers hold up acceptable levels of performance? Will the Roblox mob come and assassinate me for using up too much bandwidth?

If anyone knows anything much about this, let me know. I’m very curious.

200 players in action with particles will result in nothing but a mess with this poor optimised servers of roblox. It would be a miracle if the players could activate their weapons even once

Talking about how optimised game? If its little over a baseplate and a gun its dead by start unfortunately
