DataStores Access and Storage Updates

Why should we have to pay, whilst roblox takes 70% already

This would be a problem if you assumed there was zero limits. It’s almost certainly not going to be a problem if you were constraining yourself to the existing-for-several-years 4MB limit.

Stop making up fearmongering nonsense, thanks. There is zero reason to think this other than your own jaded pessimism.

For the vast majority of experiences (over 55 million), you’ll actually have more storage available due to the 100MB baseline or the 1MB per scaling lifetime player. Fewer than 30 experiences are currently forecasted to hit the limits.

If your experience is one of them, we’ve already sent you a DM with options before the limits take effect in 1 year.

These what-if scenarios when only 30 experiences total have actually gone over these new limits is tiring. This thread is a back and forth of the same talking points and it honestly seems like nobody has an idea of how much 4MB is or the actual impact of lifetime players as a metric for this.

Good luck to those who will still try to make sense in this thread - the resistance is strong.

The difference is that the existing limits were per datastore record, but these new limits as far as I can understand are global, for all data across the entire game’s datastores. If these limits were per record it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.

You can do some math to figure out if this will affect you based on your planned storage format, but I would bet not unless you’re doing something absurd that you shouldn’t be doing (such as generating and retaining a massive world and having the player play in 1% of it). Even free-form building should be fine provided you take steps to compress your data and store it intelligently.

Again. Only 30/55,000,000 experiences currently exceed these limits. There’s innumerable building experiences on this platform already.

casual roblox, who the hell asked for this? i have never seen anyone complain about datastores?
as always, roblox sharing 0 information on why they are doing stuff no one asked for
(maybe look at the features request )

I don’t think people complaining about datastores would make Roblox downgrade them.

Wow, just as I was getting massive progress on my game going

Im just going to use off platform databases, well done roblox, you really do love to kick developers

You cannot see the further implications these new core limitations brings. Things will get worse, thats how public companies are run. Cut costs constantly for infinite growth.

As always, devforum reading 0 information in the thread before getting mad and rageposting. Scroll up. This is not the problem every armchair dev in this thread thinks it is.

So they’re limiting us on how much data we can put in our experiences?

their only implications for most restrictions/feature requirements seem to either be “safety”, to get more profit or to attempt to accumulate more IDs from people, despite the feature probably not needing it at all

Roblox developers have been operating under the idea that there was realistically no total data store limit. In the end with these new limitations, only 30 experiences have gone over.

With these limitations in mind, I’m VERY sure you’ll never reach the data limit without intentionally trying.

Guys just use platforms like supabase or firebase, they offer hosting solutions for databases. This update is just, bad, if im being real its bad

We understand your concern, but the impact should not be felt by 99.99% of experiences. For the fewer than 30 experiences that may be affected, we’ve already reached out directly with options before the limits take effect next year.

Also, keep in mind that data will be automatically compressed for storage, which should help manage space more efficiently!

Just like walking outside wearing layers of clothing because it’s 30 degrees outside, except you realize it’s in Celsius and not Fahrenheit.

It’s really not that bad, you just need to look at it differently than you are now.

You are wrong, sorry. You think those will be cheaper? Roblox is giving me 6.5 terabytes of storage for free. Get off the rage train. 30/55,000,000 exceed current limits. That is 0.00006%

hopefully yall don’t break datastore key logic in the same way how you’ve been doing so in terms of platform performance to where 1 extremely small key starts taking up 600 MBs or some insane value
