Development discussion needs some changes

Hey there,

I’m pretty sure we need some light on these sorts of topic. Many of us hate those random topics on the devforum. I believe many of us (Including me) have made those topics and honestly, their just clutter.

This, This, And this, Also this. I personally feel we just don’t need these topics, their not bringing valuable feedback to anyone instead their just adding on to a long list of topics that has random things about developers. Now, don’t get me wrong here #development-discussion is a VERY important category but these topics make it hard to become efficient.

My proposal is that Development Discussion be used only to supply valuable feedback, start important discussions between developers instead of the current situation where anything related to development can be posted.

PROS:

  • Much easier communication, easier to-read topics.
  • We don’t need to scroll through the clutter and report a topic every so frequently.

CONS:

  • These topics do let us show off our past experiences and cool stuff were working on and their a nice subject to discuss upon.

Thanks for reading. Please share opinions below.

Should we remove posts that don’t target a issue and have no value in feedback in development discussion?

Look, no offense to you, but you shouldn’t be talking. You have made these posts. I agree with your point, but this post is quite hypocritical. If DET does nothing, you could at least not do the same.

Sorry I am being harsh, however I feel strongly about this.

Edit: whoops, overrread this, sorry. :grimacing:

I’m a tad confused - is this about the discussion themselves or the replies? Two links direct to replies and two direct to the starter discussions. One of my replies was used as an example so I’m curious lol

Ah ok, thanks for letting me know.

I said this above in the post if you read this:

This is about the discussion itself or in other words the post’s topic.

I agree that there should be more of a push for meaningful discussions in #development-discussion, rather than posts that vaguely have to do with development. Some are interesting to join in and I have joined in a few admittedly, but in the long run it only clutters up the category further.

For example, in the post where I was pinged via my reply being linked, it’s an interesting discussion about bad habits programmers have and use and other various programmers share their opinions on it, however it’s not too beneficial or meaningful to the devforum. It may be beneficial in that various programmers might bring up deprecated/better solutions to code, but it’s a bit of a stretch that can be pointed out in #help-and-feedback:code-review when it’s used/the focus of the topic.

Adding forth, I realize many people do this for just the simple likes. I’m not basing this on everyone as many wish to just make a meaningful topic, some people wish to achieve the likes on their topic wish is completely absurd.

I believe likes and replies should have a 0% of influence on Roblox development discussions. This addition to the guidelines can very well make the amount of spam & clutter on the forum lower.

I don’t get why my post would be linked in here, its a discussion about an obvious development topic. To say funding isn’t important to development here on roblox is a tad outrageous.

I made the topic because myself and a few of my mates were wondering how other developers went about funding their games.

Your point is generally right, there are some bad topics in just about every category but you’ve used some quite odd examples.

Didn’t mean to offend anyone, Was simply just starting a conversation simply about their creations, ideas, and possibly what they have achieved. To me it allows them to express themselves, Although it’s not for feedback it allows people to have a normal conversation within the forum.

Now that I read this I see what I have done wrong, I agree. It should just be a platform for feedback, Help, and more. I understand your situation as you have seen our posts. Recently my post has been flagged as off-topic, Now inappropriate for asking people what they have achieved in Roblox and what they should add or update, In which I do not understand how that doesn’t follow the guidelines, Anyhow, I do now see my problem with my topic, So I do apologize.

Anyway, moving on. I agree with this, I see my mistake now and I think we should mainly just make it for valuable feedback and assistance towards the community. I was an unaware posts like these would cause problematic issues. I agree with you entirely, There are other platforms for conversations and topics such as mine or examples similar to those you linked.

Side note: Although the part about “What should Roblox add or update” should be allowed anyhow as it goes towards the future of Roblox entirely and how development will progress. It gives suggestions towards roblox entirely, Although its not beneficial for programmers in current time, Maybe roblox might take into credit some of the things people suggest. (After I edited the post to change the topic to this, It was flagged inappropriate.)

“How do you fund your projects” is a perfectly fine and useful discussion to have. The topics that are simply questions without a motivation for the discussion attached could be better, but I’m not sure if it’s worth closing them out entirely. E.g. “In what order do you make your games” can be useful information to a new developer trying to figure out the best way to start - the motivation for the discussion topic is implicit. 3/4 of your examples are like this; they have implicit motivations on behalf of the person posting, or are useful to readers. We should continue to close out topics that are simply asking blind questions that are obvious yes/no questions, or are not useful to anyone / simply gathering facts for no reason, but I think you’re being too aggressive in identifying topics like this.

There were already many similar topics, I’ve seen like 10 that said you want to achieve in 20XX
