Distrokid songs

i’m not able to play distrokid songs using a boombox in my own game (even if i have the song in my inventory), but it does work with certain distrokid songs in my inventory.
this bug doesn’t happen when i put the song in my game using roblox studio

Hey @mario213346 , thank you for reporting the issue, we’d be happy to take a look.
Can you please clarify how you are adding tracks to your game/experience??

  • from your post it looks like in the case where things are working, you are using Studio interface, getting the track in Toolbox (creator-store) and dragging/dropping that into your game, and this flow works.
  • in the case where things are not working, can you please clarify how you are adding the tracks to your experience?? or playing them in boombox.
  • since my game has a soundtrack, i sometimes want to change some of the songs and i do it by changing the soundid of the song and it works perfectly fine with distrokid songs
  • i am doing it by adding a boombox tool to my inventory using the :boombox admin command (i use adonis admin for the admin system) and then putting the id of the song i want to play. i tested it using :music instead of :boombox and the result is still the same

Did you get an update on this? Also having the same issue

I don’t know if Distrokid audios are meant to be given permission (by default) to be used in your experiences.

I have also experienced this. There are two ways to go about this:

  1. Go to your experience’s “Permissions” category and add the Audio ID of the Distrokid audio you’d like to use and press “Save” afterwards.

  2. You can also insert the audio in to your game within Studio and it’ll automatically give permission to it.

The “solutions” above should work as long as you have the audios in your inventory.

I want to confirm that the suggestion @Floo_d is making is the right one, i.e to be able to use DistroKid tracks in your experience:

  1. The track has to be in your inventory
  2. The track needs to be added(inserted) into your experience.

These 2 steps make sure that the experience has the right permissions to use the audio.

@mario213346 - we checked the data on our end and our best understanding is that you probably don’t have the item in their inventory, and that’s why you see the permission errors.

i removed and added the songs to my inventory and now it’s working

Since they’re public audio released from a partnered publisher, wouldn’t it make sense for them to automatically load even if not in the creator’s inventory? That’s the case with Roblox-Uploaded audio after all. Creators can’t just add every Distrokid audio to their inventory, which means a huge selection of high-quality music is unavailable for boombox type gears/systems (users input audio ids)…

Yes, Also adding an audio object for every audio is too much unnecessary load to the games directory when all the id’s can be inside a script or could even be user inputted if the would just work like roblox audios.

so i think its a data bug or its just distrokid songs being a pain in the a**

I think the intention is to make DistroKid songs harder to use passively. Or also because they are not exactly free music, the creators of those audio tracks get paid something as far as I know. So explicitly adding them into your place and publishing your place forces those IDs to be tied to the published version your place probably so that they can maintain some kind of ratings for that audio. Whereas letting the audios be accessed after the fact would let users play those audios without them explicitly being put in the game by the creator and they might not be able to track the plays (or usre) based on how the system is currently set up.

Whoops that’s not true. I just was able to play a DistroKid song during the game already running.

weirdly enough i was able to play it after removing and adding the song again to my inventory

Later that song stopped working. The only way to keep it working for sure is to indeed have the id in a SoundId of a “Sound” instance, somewhere in your game
