Do badges have any benefits?

I’m considering adding badges into my game/future games but I’m trying to determine if they are actually worth adding. Does having a large selection of badges actually influence a player more into playing the game? Would like to hear some people’s opinions on this and what they think! Thanks

Badges are worth adding because it gives the some player a incentive to play the game. Someone might play your game for hours just to get a badge.

Yes it does first it makes your game more popular and fun to do because they are gonna play the game for the badge

Example if you mad a badge that’s says “you found it!” The other players who see your inventory will know that and they want to find it too

Whenever I see a interesting badge on someone’s badges list I always click and play the game if it is interesting. Also I would add badges so players have something to work for its even better if they give something in game if you achieve it.

You could reward a player if they played another one of your games and had a specific badge, similar to what @Cindering when he migrated specific values from his RHS to RHS2 via badges.
TL;DR basically like rewarding a player for playing your other game.

Badges are definitely worth adding into your game in my opinion because when someone actually gets one, they get a sense of accomplishment and they feel good about themselves. Also, for some reason people (including me) grind for hours to get badges in games.

Could you replicate this effect with an ingame achievement system?

If I had an ingame achievement system where if someone did something they would get a reward ingame instead of a badge, would the player still be motivated enough to work to get the reward?

Well depends on what your reward would be. If there was some kind of board that showcased all of your achievements in the game that they won, then in my opinion they would want to win each badge.

A player probably would still be pretty motivated, but nothing beats having a shiny badge on your profile of your accomplishment, no? ;p

I mean it doesn’t directly make anyone want to play more, but it can in the case of earning it through a secret or getting somthing like 50 kills can add more to the game itself and make it seem more accomplished

Personally, I feel more atracted to a game when it have badges, and even more if those badges are hard to get. So I would say that having badges is a way to attract more players

A badge like a “Welcome!” or “You Played!” badge might be a good move because if a player sees their favorite YouTuber or their friend have a badge from your game, they might check the game out.

Badges do have many benefits - users tend to achieve badges as it’s a award to them or something cool to showcase on there profile, badges are more like a achievement. E.g. if it’s for a quest often times player may return back to achieve them or continue working for it!

You could implement badges in certain parts of your game whether it’s completing a specific level, having this amount of points so on and so forth. I wouldn’t include a bunch of random badges in areas but make it throughout the gameplay in certain locations; to make players work for it.

Variety of games include badges as an achievement for players playing there game or to make them work for it. When adding badges it needs to be related to the content in the game.

The general reaction to getting a badge is a “Yay” if it is hard enough to get.

Badges are worth adding, I remember trying to get a badge in a game for days and sometimes I click other’s badges to get them. :wink:

Badges are stupid easy and cheap to add, and I can’t express/stress on how much they outweigh the benefits of creating them. There are completionists, players that likes to get every achievement the game has to offer. Just make sure that the badges are rewarding, take it akin to receiving candy, too much will be negative. Don’t make it bland like: 10 kills > 100 kills > 1000 kills. Make sure that the achievement is FUN and REWARDING to get.

If you do make badges just take note of the types:

  1. Story: the player will unlock this normally through play. This might be end of chapter badges if your game has a story
  2. Achievement: received when performing skillful feats. Proof of a player’s skill is enough to motivate them to do better
  3. Activities: awarded to players for performing things the game designer wants them to do. Sometimes they don’t have to be related to the game, just random things the player can do in your game
  4. Hidden: secret badges, this might be all the types. Make sure the badge is something attainable

Observed Benefits:

  1. Increased playtime from completionists
  2. Reward system
  3. Advertisement from having the badge displayed in a player’s profile
  4. Another way for designers to push players to do what designers want
  5. Pushes players to be skillful in your game

Try to design it so that the player receives the badges in a spaced order. Making them addicting is possible, you can announce to the server that a player received a badge or something, have tons of stimulus like sounds and lights whenever the player achieves them. You can even recommend players to achieve the badge. Badges are extremely versatile with plethora of uses.

Personally I love it when a game gives me a badge since I like having a huge collection of them. It gives a player the target of gameplay for a certain goal, for say, a badge.
